Every game kicking off inside the window has its own report below. The slate was pulled from nfl.com and cross-checked against the league injury page and the Netflix and NFL Melbourne match listings. Sixteen games, sixteen reports, all thirty-two teams in action.
Three to watch
If you only pick three
New England at Seattle
Wednesday 8:20 PM ET, NBC
The Super Bowl LX rematch opens the season, seven months after Seattle won it 29-13. Two 14-3 teams whose records were built against wildly different schedules.
San Francisco at the L.A. Rams
Thursday 8:35 PM ET, Netflix
The first NFL regular-season game ever played in Australia, at a 100,000-seat cricket ground. Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald line up together for the first time on a Rams defence rebuilt to match the league's highest-scoring offence.
Denver at Kansas City
Monday 8:15 PM ET, ESPN/ABC
Patrick Mahomes's expected return from a torn ACL, against the team that took his division while he was out. Denver was 14-3 last season; Kansas City was 6-11.
The signature measure this week
The reset board
Ten franchises hired a new head coach this offseason and eight open with a different Week 1 quarterback than they used in 2025. That is the highest combined turnover of the decade, and it is the reason last season’s numbers deserve less weight this week than in any other week of the year. A team that kept its coach and its quarterback has spent the summer refining. A team that changed both is finding out on Sunday.
Each team below is scored on two things only: did the head coach change, and did the Week 1 starting quarterback change. Six teams changed both. Where a game pairs a full reset against a continuity team, we have weighted continuity; where two full resets meet, we have widened the probability toward even.
Full reset — new head coach and new quarterback 6 teams. Prior-season form is close to meaningless for these.
|
Partial reset — one of the two changed 6 teams.
|
Continuity — same head coach, same Week 1 quarterback 20 teams. Last season is a usable guide.
|
Miami at Las Vegas is the only game this week between two full-reset teams. It is the fixture where our forecast carries the least information, and the probability we have attached to it reflects that rather than disguising it.
Schedule difficulty
Not applicable this week
The schedule-difficulty tiers rate the strength of the schedule each team has already played. In Week 1 that schedule is empty: thirty of the thirty-two teams have played no regular-season football, and the two in Wednesday’s opener will have played one game between them by Sunday. Opponent winning percentage is undefined, so there is nothing to rank and no tiers are published. They open in Week 2 and stay provisional through Week 5.
In place of the tiers, the table below carries last season’s finishing position for all thirty-two teams. It is prior-season context and is labelled as such throughout this report; it is not a 2026 rating and it is not a schedule-difficulty tier.

New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks
Lumen Field, Seattle, WA · NBC / Universo / Telemundo
|
Overview
The league opens with the rematch it wanted. Seattle raises a banner and then plays the team it beat for it seven months earlier, and the two arrive with identical 2025 regular-season records and very different claims on them. Both finished 14-3. The similarity ends there: Seattle earned its record against the fifth-hardest schedule in football and New England against the third-easiest since 1978, a gap of six points per game in strength of schedule. Seattle's plus-191 point differential was the best in the league; the Seahawks then committed zero turnovers across the entire postseason, the first champion ever to do that.
New England has not stood still. A.J. Brown arrived from Philadelphia for a first and a fifth, giving Drake Maye the outside receiver the offense lacked in February, and Maye is a year removed from an MVP runner-up season. Seattle's counter-argument is a defence that finished first in the league by any measure worth using and returns essentially intact under Mike Macdonald, one of only two staffs in football that made no meaningful changes this offseason.
The pressure point is Seattle's offensive continuity, or lack of it. Brian Fleury is the fourth offensive coordinator in four years for Sam Darnold, and the backfield has turned over completely with Walker gone to Kansas City and Charbonnet on PUP. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year after a 1,793-yard season, is the constant.

Key absences and roster impacts
New England Patriots
Harold Landry III Reserve/PUP, out at least four games Led New England with 8.5 sacks in 2025. His absence is the single biggest reason to doubt the Patriots' pass rush in a hostile opener. |
Brenden Schooler Reserve/NFI, out at least four games Core special-teamer; a quiet loss in a game where field position matters. |
Seattle Seahawks
Zach Charbonnet Reserve/PUP (ACL), out at least four games Jadarian Price steps in as the lead back. Seattle also let Kenneth Walker III leave for Kansas City, so the run game is almost entirely new. |
Terrion Arnold Commissioner's Exempt list Removes a rotation corner against a receiver group that just added A.J. Brown. |

Seattle won Super Bowl LX 29-13 at Levi's Stadium on Feb 8. Kenneth Walker III took MVP with 27 carries for 135 yards; Maye was sacked six times and threw two interceptions, one returned for a score by Nwosu. Jason Myers kicked five field goals, a Super Bowl record.

Advanced analysis
Seattle's defence allowed 17.2 points per game in 2025, the fewest in the NFL, and did it while facing a schedule 6.1 points per game tougher than New England's. Adjust the two records for opposition and the distance between these teams is roughly seven points, which is exactly twice what the market is asking.
New England's route to the upset runs through tempo and the middle of the field. Landry's absence means the Patriots will likely need to manufacture pressure with volume rather than talent, and Darnold's history says he is a different quarterback when clean than when hurried. If New England cannot get home, the Seahawks' play-action game against a secondary that ranked 23rd by DSRS a year ago becomes the story of the night.
Analyst commentary
We are laying 3.5 and projecting seven, which is a deliberate disagreement with a line that has not moved a half point since the schedule came out in May. The disagreement rests on one thing: strength of schedule. New England's 14-3 was built against the softest slate in the modern era and its underlying rating (SRS 5.5) sits closer to a good playoff team than a great one, while Seattle's 12.8 was the best in football.
The case against us is real. Opening night, a rematch, an emotional building, and a Patriots team that has genuinely improved at receiver. Week 1 is also when continuity matters most, and Seattle's offence has less of it than its defence. If this stays inside a touchdown, the Patriots' new-look passing game is the reason.

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams
Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia · Netflix
|
Overview
The first regular-season NFL game ever played in Australia, at a cricket ground that holds 100,000 people, kicking off at 10:35 in the morning local time so that it lands in Thursday night primetime back home. The Jonas Brothers play the half. Luke Kuechly, inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, makes his debut in the booth alongside Noah Eagle. Netflix has it exclusively, worldwide.
Beneath the spectacle is the best matchup of the opening week on merit. The Rams scored 518 points in 2025, more than any team in football, behind the league MVP: Matthew Stafford threw for 4,707 yards and Los Angeles finished second in SRS at 12.5, a tenth of a point behind the eventual champion. They lost the NFC Championship Game to Seattle and responded by spending the offseason building a defence to match the offence.
That rebuild is the story. Los Angeles traded Jared Verse to Cleveland for Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year who led the NFL with 25 sacks; imported both of Kansas City's starting corners in Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson; and then talked Aaron Donald out of two years of retirement on a one-year deal worth $20 million, escalating to $30 million. Garrett and Donald will line up together on the same front. San Francisco, 12-5 and a wild-card team a year ago, gets to find out first what that looks like.

Advanced analysis
The Rams outscored opponents by 10.1 points per game in 2025 and San Francisco by 3.9, and the gap in SRS is 6.5 points. On neutral turf that would suggest a number closer to a touchdown than to 3.5, and the market's reluctance to go there is a statement about two things: divisional familiarity, and the fact that nobody knows what a 100,000-seat cricket ground and 7,900 miles does to either team.
The individual matchup to watch is Garrett and Donald against a San Francisco interior that has to protect Brock Purdy on a short week in an unfamiliar environment. Garrett drew a chip on more than a quarter of his snaps in 2025, the second-highest rate among edge defenders in the league, and he still led the NFL in sacks. Chipping him now means fewer bodies for Donald inside.
Analyst commentary
We land almost exactly on the number, and that is the honest answer rather than a hedge. The Rams are the better team by a clear margin and have improved more than any roster in football this offseason. Against that: this is a division game, the sixth meeting in three seasons, the 'home' team has no meaningful home advantage, and Week 1 punishes new personnel groupings. Los Angeles has three brand-new starters on defence who have never played a competitive snap together.
Take the Rams, but treat a one-score game as the expected outcome rather than the upset. The total of 48.5 is the second-highest on the slate and looks right for two offences that both finished top-eight in points.
Game 03 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 1:00 PM ET |
Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC · FOX
|
Overview
Two division winners who arrived by opposite routes. Chicago went 11-6 in Ben Johnson's first year, took the NFC North, and beat Green Bay in a wild-card game decided by a touchdown inside the final three minutes. Carolina won the NFC South at 8-9 with a point differential of minus 69, the weakest profile of any playoff team, then went to Los Angeles and lost another one-score wild-card game to the Rams.
Carolina's optimism rests on Tetairoa McMillan, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, and on a defence that was quietly the better half of the team. The problem is the offensive line. Both starting tackles, Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton, are on the reserve list and unavailable for at least four games. Bryce Young will open the season behind two replacement tackles.
Chicago has its own injury story, in the mirror image. The Bears were hit hard in the secondary across the offseason, with Kyler Gordon among those unavailable, and carried questions about D'Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai and Luther Burden into the final week of camp. A depleted Chicago back seven against a Carolina passing game missing its tackles is a genuinely awkward matchup to read.

Advanced analysis
Chicago scored 25.9 points per game in 2025 and allowed 24.4; Carolina scored 18.3 and allowed 22.4. That is a six-point-per-game gap in net scoring, which argues for a bigger number than 2.5. The market is discounting it because Chicago's defensive injuries are concentrated exactly where Carolina is strongest, at receiver.
The tackle situation should decide it. Pass protection is the hardest thing to patch in Week 1, when a replacement tackle has had a full camp with the ones only if the injury happened early. Expect Chicago to pressure with four and drop seven, which is also the coverage structure that best hides a thin secondary.
Analyst commentary
Chicago is the better team and gets to attack the one part of Carolina that is genuinely broken. We take the Bears by four, a point and a half past the number.
The reasons to be careful: heat, a 1:00 PM kickoff in Charlotte in mid-September with the field in the mid-80s, and a Bears secondary that may not be able to cover McMillan for four quarters. Carolina's path is a low-possession game in which the defence keeps it close and McMillan wins two or three explosive plays. That is a live scenario, not a remote one, and it is why we are not pushing this past a field goal.
Game 04 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 1:00 PM ET |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals
Paycor Stadium, Cincinnati, OH · FOX
|
Overview
The highest total of the week, 50.5, and it is a verdict on defence rather than a compliment to either offence. Cincinnati allowed 492 points in 2025, 28.9 per game, and posted a defensive SRS of minus 6.4 that was among the worst in football. The Bengals went 6-11 despite an offence that rated positively, because they could not stop anyone.
Tampa Bay was 8-9 with a minus-31 differential and a roughly average profile on both sides. Baker Mayfield returns for a team that has changed less than most this offseason, which in a week of wholesale turnover across the league is worth something on its own.
The question hanging over the game is Ja'Marr Chase, who sat out a practice in late August and has been limited since. There is no official designation yet. Joe Burrow with a full complement of receivers against this Tampa Bay secondary is a different proposition from Joe Burrow without his best one.

Cincinnati scored 24.4 points per game and allowed 28.9. Tampa Bay scored 22.4 and allowed 24.2. Neither defence has shown it can get off the field, and both offences are capable of scoring in the twenties without much resistance. The total is the most defensible number on the board.
The spread is harder. A 3.5-point home line for a 6-11 team against an 8-9 team is pricing in Burrow's health and the assumption that Cincinnati's defence regresses toward the mean. Both are reasonable assumptions and both are assumptions.
Analyst commentary
We take Cincinnati to win and Tampa Bay to cover, which is the same call expressed two ways: the Bengals are better, but not by four points, and a 3.5 with the hook against a team that beat them by more than that in underlying quality last season is a poor price.
Game script matters here. If this becomes the shootout the total implies, the team with the ball last wins and the margin lands inside a field goal. Our projection of a three-point Cincinnati win reflects that. The scenario that breaks the analysis is Chase being genuinely limited, in which case Tampa Bay is the better side outright.

Detroit scored 481 points in 2025, fourth-most in the league, and still finished 9-8 because the defence gave up 24.3 per game. The offence is intact. The defence, which was the problem, opens the season without both starting safeties: Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are on the reserve list for at least four games.
That would be a serious concern against most opponents. New Orleans is not most opponents. The Saints scored 18.0 points per game in 2025, third-fewest in football, and open the season with Tyler Shough at quarterback, Alvin Kamara out for at least a month, and rookie receiver Jordyn Tyson sidelined roughly two months with a hamstring. Shough will be the fourth different Week 1 starter New Orleans has used since Drew Brees retired.
Indoors, on turf, against an offence built for exactly this environment, the Saints need the game to stay slow. Nothing about the matchup suggests it will.

Advanced analysis
The scoring gap is the largest on the slate outside the Chargers game: Detroit averaged 28.3 points per game, New Orleans 18.0. Detroit's SRS of 3.9 against New Orleans' minus 4.9 is a gap of nearly nine points per game.
Detroit's missing safeties matter most against play-action and seam throws, and New Orleans does not currently have the personnel to punish that. Without Kamara there is also no screen and check-down game to move the chains against a defence playing soft. The Saints' realistic route is turnovers and field position.
Analyst commentary
Ten points, three past the number. This is one of the few games this week where the talent gap is large enough that Week 1 variance is unlikely to close it, and where the injuries fall on the side that can least afford them.
The counter-argument deserves a hearing: Detroit's secondary is genuinely compromised, laying seven in Week 1 is historically a poor proposition, and Detroit has a habit of playing to the level of the opponent early in seasons. If New Orleans keeps this inside a touchdown it will be because Detroit's safeties were exposed by a scheme rather than by talent.

Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars
EverBank Stadium, Jacksonville, FL · CBS
|
Overview
The lowest total of the week, 40.5, and the reason is Cleveland's offence. The Browns scored 279 points in 2025, 16.4 per game and fewest in the NFL, with an offensive SRS of minus 8.0 that was the worst mark in football by a distance. Todd Monken arrives from Baltimore as head coach and has named Deshaun Watson his Week 1 starter over rookie Shedeur Sanders.
Cleveland also traded away the best defensive player in the league. Myles Garrett went to the Rams for Jared Verse, which is a defensible long-term move and an immediate downgrade. Carson Schwesinger, the 2025 Defensive Rookie of the Year, is the reason to think the defence holds up better than the roster suggests.
Jacksonville went 13-4 and won the AFC South in Liam Coen's first year, scoring 27.9 per game and allowing 19.8, then lost a wild-card game to Buffalo by three. Trevor Lawrence returns to a team that has changed almost nothing. In a week defined by turnover, Jacksonville's continuity is an edge in itself.

Advanced analysis
Jacksonville outscored opponents by 8.1 points per game in 2025; Cleveland was outscored by 5.9. The SRS gap of 16.1 points is the second largest of the week. A 7.5-point spread is, if anything, generous to Cleveland, and reflects the market's respect for the Browns' defence rather than any belief in the offence.
Weather is a real variable, and it favours the home team. Kickoff temperature near 87°F with high humidity and a 55% chance of storms is a hard first assignment for a team travelling from Cleveland, particularly for defensive linemen in a four-man rotation that just lost its best player. Expect Jacksonville to lean on the run and shorten the game.
Analyst commentary
We take Jacksonville by ten, two and a half past the number, and the low total does most of the work: in a game projected into the thirties, a ten-point margin is a comfortable win rather than a blowout.
The way Cleveland covers is by making it a 16-13 game. The defence is better than the record, Schwesinger is a real player, and Jacksonville's offence has not proven it can put teams away. But asking a bottom-ranked offence to travel into Florida heat and score enough to matter is a lot, and we would rather be on the side that does not have to.

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans
NRG Stadium, Houston, TX · CBS
|
Overview
The closest line on the board, and the most interesting game of the early Sunday window. Both teams went 12-5 in 2025. Houston did it with the better underlying profile: an SRS of 8.6 against Buffalo's 4.5, and a defence that allowed 17.4 points per game, second-fewest in football. Buffalo scored 28.3 per game and gave up 21.5, a much noisier team.
Buffalo also arrives with a new head coach in circumstances nobody predicted. Sean McDermott was fired two days after an overtime divisional-round loss at Denver, and offensive coordinator Joe Brady was promoted. Josh Allen returns, as does James Cook, who led the NFL with 1,621 rushing yards.
Houston's problem is receiver. Jayden Higgins tore an ACL and is out for the season, Tank Dell is on injured reserve with a return designation, and the Texans signed Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones in the aftermath. C.J. Stroud will be throwing to a group assembled in the last three weeks of August.

|
Advanced analysis
This is the week's clearest case of a record hiding a difference in quality. Both teams won twelve games; Houston did it against a schedule 4.5 points per game harder, and finished with an SRS four points better. Houston's defensive SRS of 7.2 was the best in the AFC.
The matchup is Houston's defence against Buffalo's offence, and Houston has already won that argument once: the Texans beat the Bills in Week 12 last season. Buffalo's counter is Cook and the ground game, which is the way to attack a defence built to rush the passer. A first-year head coach installing a new offence, on the road, indoors, against the AFC's best defence is a demanding opening assignment.
Analyst commentary
We are taking the home underdog outright, which is our largest disagreement with the market this week alongside Monday night. Houston is better by every rate measure, is at home, and beat this opponent last season. The line has Buffalo laying 1.5 largely on Josh Allen's name.
The case against us is Houston's receiving room, which is genuinely thin, and the fact that Allen is capable of winning a game like this by himself. If Stroud cannot find anyone outside Nico Collins, Houston's defence has to be close to perfect. We think it can be. This is the game on the slate we would most want to watch to learn something real about both teams.
Game 08 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 1:00 PM ET |
Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts
Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN · CBS
|
Overview
Two 8-9 teams who both believe last season was an aberration, meeting in a building where the roof will be closed and the football should be fast. Baltimore's 2025 was undone by injuries and by a defence that fell apart: Lamar Jackson played only thirteen games, dealing with a hamstring injury and a back contusion, and the Ravens missed the playoffs by a missed field goal. John Harbaugh was fired after eighteen seasons; Jesse Minter, a former Ravens assistant and most recently the Chargers' defensive coordinator, is the fourth head coach in franchise history.
Indianapolis has the more encouraging underlying numbers. The Colts scored 27.4 points per game in 2025 with an offensive SRS of 5.9, and their overall rating of 5.0 was better than Baltimore's 1.1 despite the identical record. Daniel Jones, whose breakout first year in Indianapolis was cut short by a torn Achilles, is back and healthy, with Anthony Richardson settled as the backup.
Baltimore's talent is not in question. Jackson led the NFL at 13.3 yards per completion even in a compromised season, and Derrick Henry, Kyle Hamilton and Roquan Smith are all still here. Whether a first-time head coach can reassemble that defence in September is.

Advanced analysis
Indianapolis was the better team by rating in 2025 and is at home, which makes a 3.5-point road favourite an aggressive number. The market is paying for Jackson's health rather than for last season's results, and that is a reasonable thing to pay for.
The pressure point is Baltimore's offensive line. Danny Pinter's torn patellar tendon removes the starting centre from a unit that allowed one of the league's highest sack rates in 2025, and Jackson's rushing production was already at a career low as a starter. If Indianapolis can pressure up the middle without blitzing, the Colts win this.
Analyst commentary
Baltimore wins by three and does not cover. That is not a hedge; it is what the numbers say when a road favourite is laying 3.5 against a team with the better rating, at home, in a dome.
Our projection assumes a healthy Jackson, which is the single largest assumption in this report. A healthy Jackson with Henry behind him is a top-five offence and Baltimore should win comfortably. A Jackson who is again playing through something, behind a line missing its centre, loses this game. The 48.5 total is a fair price on two offences that should both move the ball.

Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers
Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA · FOX
|
Overview
Pittsburgh won the AFC North at 10-7 with a point differential of plus 10 and an SRS of 0.1, which is to say it was the most ordinary division winner in football. The response was not modest. Mike Tomlin is gone after eighteen seasons and Mike McCarthy has the job. Aaron Rodgers returns for what everyone involved is treating as a final season.
Atlanta made the more complete change. Kevin Stefanski, released by Cleveland, takes over with Ian Cunningham as general manager and Tommy Rees as offensive coordinator, while Jeff Ulbrich was retained on defence. At quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa arrives after Miami released him, because Michael Penix Jr. is still working back from ACL surgery and only returned to full team work in the last week of August. Za'Darius Smith was signed to help the pass rush.
Two teams, two new head coaches, one new quarterback, and a total of 42.5 that says the market expects both offences to take a while to find themselves.

Advanced analysis
The gap is small and the numbers agree. Pittsburgh scored 23.4 points per game and allowed 22.8; Atlanta scored 20.8 and allowed 23.6. An SRS difference of 2.9 points is almost exactly the home-field advantage, which means on neutral turf these teams are close to even.
The variable neither team can model is installation. McCarthy is running a new system with a 42-year-old quarterback; Stefanski is running a new system with a quarterback who signed this offseason. Week 1 rewards the side that has to think less, and neither of these does. Expect conservative play-calling, a low-possession game, and special teams to matter more than usual.
Analyst commentary
Pittsburgh by three, which means Atlanta covers the 3.5. Home field and a slightly better roster get the Steelers there; nothing in the profile justifies more than a field goal.
The thing worth watching beyond the result is what McCarthy's offence actually looks like. Pittsburgh has not had a new head coach since 2007, and the adjustment is as much cultural as schematic. Atlanta, for its part, has a defensive coordinator who stayed and a head coach who has done this before; Stefanski's teams have historically started seasons better than they have finished them. If the Falcons win outright, the low total is the reason.
Game 10 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 1:00 PM ET |
New York Jets at Tennessee Titans
Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN · CBS
|
Overview
The lowest total on the board, 39.5, in a game between two teams that went 3-14. This is the least glamorous fixture of the week and it is also, in its way, one of the more interesting ones, because both franchises spent the offseason arguing that the record was a floor rather than a description.
New York's 2025 was the worst season in the league by rating: an SRS of minus 12.5, 300 points scored, 503 allowed, and a quarterback carousel that ran through Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook. Geno Smith arrives by trade from Las Vegas, returning to the team that drafted him in 2013. He will be the Jets' eighth different Week 1 starter in eleven years, and according to ESPN Research no quarterback in the Super Bowl era has had a longer gap between opening-day starts for the same franchise. Frank Reich is the new offensive coordinator, Brian Duker the new defensive coordinator, under returning head coach Aaron Glenn.
Tennessee's rebuild is further along in one respect and further behind in another. Robert Saleh takes over as head coach; Cam Ward enters his second season having already been through the worst of it. The Titans' minus 8.0 SRS came against the third-hardest schedule in football, which makes them meaningfully better than 3-14 suggests.

|
Advanced analysis
Adjusted for schedule, the gap between these teams is larger than the records imply. Tennessee's strength of schedule was plus 3.4, the third-toughest in the league; New York's was minus 0.6. The SRS difference of 4.5 points is the honest measure, and it argues for a number bigger than 1.5.
The counterweight is Geno Smith. Even in a poor 2025 in Las Vegas he completed 67.4% of his passes, and he was sacked a career-high 55 times behind a broken offensive line. Behind the Jets' better line, with Breece Hall healthy, he is a clear upgrade on what New York played last season. The heat is a factor for a team travelling from New Jersey into mid-80s conditions.
Analyst commentary
Tennessee by three, a point and a half past the number. The schedule-adjusted gap does the work; so does home field on a hot afternoon.
Neither team is good and the total of 39.5 is an accurate statement about that. Expect a game decided by turnovers and a short field. The reason to like the Jets: Smith is the best quarterback either team will start, the supporting cast around him is materially better than last year's, and Reich's offence should at least be coherent. The reason to like Tennessee: Ward's second-year jump is the single most likely source of improvement on this field, and New York has to prove that anything has changed before we price it in.

Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA · CBS
|
Overview
The only double-digit spread of the week and the largest number on the board. Los Angeles went 11-6 and made the playoffs; Arizona went 3-14 and changed almost everything.
The Cardinals' reset is total. Mike LaFleur arrives as head coach from Los Angeles, where he ran the Rams offence that led the NFL in yards and points. Kyler Murray was traded to Minnesota, leaving Jacoby Brissett as the Week 1 starter. It is a rebuild announced in plain terms.
There is a caveat in Arizona's favour that the record obscures. The Cardinals played the joint-toughest schedule in football in 2025, a strength of schedule of plus 3.4, and their SRS of minus 4.4 is a good deal better than 3-14 implies. They were a bad team that was also unlucky and badly scheduled. The Chargers, meanwhile, are a good team with a modest profile: 11-6 with an SRS of 0.8 and a point differential of plus 28. Their eleven wins were built on close games rather than dominance.

Advanced analysis
This is where the market and the underlying numbers disagree most sharply anywhere on the slate. The SRS gap between these teams is 5.2 points. The spread is 10.5. Even generous home-field adjustment leaves a gap of three or four points between what the ratings say and what the market is charging.
Some of that is justified. Arizona's quarterback change is a downgrade in ceiling, and a first-year head coach installing a new offence with a journeyman starter is not a recipe for a fast start. Some of it is not: Los Angeles lost its starting centre to a torn ACL in practice, and Justin Herbert's history behind a compromised interior is not encouraging. Josh Sweat, activated off PUP, is exactly the kind of player who exploits that.
Analyst commentary
We take the Chargers to win by ten and to fail to cover by half a point, which is a deliberately uncomfortable place to land. It is also where the analysis goes. Los Angeles is clearly better and should win comfortably. Ten and a half is simply too many points against a team whose rating is five points better than its record.
Week 1 double-digit favourites are historically a poor bet, and this one has a specific vulnerability at centre. The scenario where the Chargers cover easily is a first quarter in which Brissett turns the ball over and the game is decided before Arizona's defence can settle. That is a real possibility, and it is why we are still projecting ten rather than six.

The Eagles went 11-6 with a point differential of plus 54 and an SRS of 2.8, carried by a defence that rated 4.5 while the offence rated minus 1.8. They lost a wild-card game at home to San Francisco by a touchdown inside the final three minutes.
Then they traded A.J. Brown to New England for a first and a fifth. The stated logic is cap structure and a young roster; the immediate effect is that Jalen Hurts opens the season without the receiver who has been the offence's most reliable separator.
Washington was 5-12 with a minus 95 differential, the second-worst mark in the conference. Jayden Daniels returns behind a roster that did not add much, and Marcus Mariota's knee has left the backup situation unsettled. This is a game the Eagles should win; the question is whether an offence in transition can win it by six.

Advanced analysis
The rating gap is 8.5 points, which comfortably supports a 5.5-point home line. Philadelphia's defence is the reason: 19.1 points allowed per game and a DSRS of 4.5, against a Washington offence that managed 20.9 per game.
The offensive question is real, though. Trading Brown removes the player who forced single coverage for everyone else, and Week 1 is when a new receiver hierarchy is least likely to be sorted out. Expect Philadelphia to lean heavily on the run and on Hurts as a runner in the red zone, which is a lower-variance path to twenty-four points than the one they took last season.
Analyst commentary
Philadelphia by seven, a point and a half past the number. The defence travels, the division familiarity cuts both ways, and Washington does not have the offence to keep pace if it falls behind by two scores.
The reason this could be closer: division openers are historically tight, Daniels is capable of producing explosive plays against any defence, and the Eagles' passing game is genuinely unsettled without Brown. If Philadelphia's offence stalls in the twenties and the game turns on field position, Washington covers comfortably without ever threatening to win.
Game 13 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 4:25 PM ET |
Miami Dolphins at Las Vegas Raiders
Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, NV · FOX
|
Overview
The only game this week in which both teams changed head coach and quarterback, which makes it the least predictable fixture on the board and the one where last season's numbers are worth the least.
Las Vegas was 3-14 with an SRS of minus 10.5 and scored 241 points, fewest in the NFL by a wide margin. Pete Carroll was dismissed after a single season and Klint Kubiak, Seattle's offensive coordinator, has the job. Kirk Cousins opens at quarterback ahead of Fernando Mendoza, the first overall pick, whom the front office has publicly said must earn the role. Ashton Jeanty, the offence's centrepiece, sprained an ankle late in camp and his availability is unresolved.
Miami tore the roster down. Tua Tagovailoa was released and signed in Atlanta. Jeff Hafley arrives as head coach and Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager, both from Green Bay, and they brought Malik Willis with them on a three-year, $67.5 million deal. Tutu Atwell was traded back to the Rams. What is left is a 7-10 roster that has been made younger and, in the short term, worse.

Advanced analysis
Neither 2025 profile is a reliable guide. Miami's minus 6.3 SRS and Las Vegas's minus 10.5 both describe teams that no longer exist in any meaningful sense. What remains usable is that Las Vegas was worse, is at home, and has the more experienced quarterback.
The total of 40.5 is the joint-lowest of the week and looks right. Two new offensive systems, two quarterbacks who have never started for these teams, and a combined 2025 scoring average of 34.6 points per game between them. Expect a slow, conservative game with a lot of punting. Jeanty's availability is the swing factor: with him, Las Vegas has a way to move the ball without asking Cousins to win it.
Analyst commentary
Las Vegas by three, which means Miami covers the 3.5. We are not confident in either side and the honest expression of that is a projection that sits within a field goal of the number.
This is the game on the slate where we would most encourage discounting our own forecast. Both teams have a new head coach, a new quarterback, and a substantially new roster; there is no meaningful prior. If Jeanty is out, Miami is arguably the better side. If Cousins looks like the quarterback he was in 2023 rather than the one he was in 2025, Las Vegas wins by two scores. Neither outcome would be surprising, which is precisely why the probability sits close to even.
Game 14 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 4:25 PM ET |
Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings
U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN · CBS
|
Overview
A division game between two teams separated by half a game in 2025 and by a great deal more than that in what they have available this Sunday.
Green Bay was 9-7-1, made the playoffs as a wild card, and lost at Chicago by four. The Packers open the season without their two best non-quarterbacks. Micah Parsons, a first-team All-Pro in 2025, is on the reserve list for at least four games. Josh Jacobs is on the Commissioner's Exempt list pending an investigation into domestic abuse allegations, with no timeline for a return. Marshawn Lloyd inherits the backfield; Jonnu Smith was signed to deepen the tight end room behind a recovering Tucker Kraft.
Minnesota went 9-8 with the more conservative profile: 20.2 points per game scored, 19.6 allowed, and a defensive SRS of 4.2 that was among the better marks in the conference. The change is at quarterback, where Kyler Murray arrives from Arizona and J.J. McCarthy, the 2024 first-round pick, moves to the bench. Jamal Adams's knee injury has been described internally in bleak terms.

Advanced analysis
On last season's numbers these teams are within half a point of each other in SRS, 1.0 to 0.7. The 1.5-point home line is therefore about right before adjusting for availability, and availability is where this game is decided.
Losing Parsons and Jacobs simultaneously costs Green Bay its best pass rusher and its lead back on the same weekend. Against a Minnesota defence that was built to make offences earn everything on long fields, that is a poor trade. The offsetting factor is Murray's fit: he is a substantial talent upgrade in the abstract, but he is learning a new offence, and quarterbacks changing teams have historically opened slowly.
Analyst commentary
Minnesota by four, two and a half past the number, on availability rather than on any strong belief that the Vikings are the better roster.
The case for Green Bay: Jordan Love and Matt LaFleur are the most stable quarterback-coach pairing on this field by a distance, and continuity is worth more in Week 1 than in any other week of the season. Minnesota is integrating a new starting quarterback into an offence that finished 2025 rating negatively. If Murray is not ready, the Packers can win this without Parsons and without Jacobs. We would not want to be laying more than a field goal either way.
Game 15 of 16 | Sunday, September 13 · 8:20 PM ET |
Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants
MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ · NBC / Universo (Sunday Night Football)
|
Overview
Sunday night gets a division game between two teams that finished a combined 11-22-1, which is a statement about brand rather than merit. It is also, in fairness, the most interesting coaching debut of the week.
John Harbaugh, fired by Baltimore after eighteen seasons and a Super Bowl, takes over the Giants. He brought Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator and Dennard Wilson as defensive coordinator, and the Giants also hired away Baltimore's special teams coordinator. Jaxson Dart makes his first career Week 1 start, the third different opening-day starter the Giants have used in three seasons. Najee Harris was signed to carry the run game. Calvin Austin III tore an ACL in August and is out for the year.
Dallas is the most statistically peculiar team in football. The Cowboys scored 471 points in 2025, sixth-most in the league, and allowed 511, the most, finishing 7-9-1 with a defensive SRS of minus 8.7 that was the worst mark of any team. The offence is genuinely good. The defence was the problem, and it is the thing that has to change.

Advanced analysis
Dallas's offensive SRS of 4.6 against New York's defensive SRS of minus 3.0 is the matchup that should decide this, and it points to points. The Cowboys' own defence rated worse than anything the Giants can put on the field, which is why the total sits at 48.5 for a game between two sub-.500 teams.
The Giants' route is Harbaugh's specialities: run the ball with Najee Harris, win special teams, shorten the game, and protect a young quarterback from having to throw thirty-eight times. Against a Dallas defence that could not stop anyone in 2025, that plan is more viable than the records suggest.
Analyst commentary
Dallas by three, half a point past the number, and this is one of the closest calls on the board. The Cowboys have the better quarterback and by some distance the better offence. The Giants have the better coaching hire and a plan that specifically attacks Dallas's weakness.
What makes us hesitate is that everything pointing to Dallas is a 2025 measurement and everything pointing to New York is a 2026 change we cannot yet quantify. Harbaugh's teams have historically been well-prepared in September, and a rookie-ish quarterback playing at home in primetime with a good run game is not the automatic loss the spread implies. Fifty-one percent is an honest number here.
Game 16 of 16 | Monday, September 14 · 8:15 PM ET |
Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs
GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO · ESPN / ABC / ESPN Deportes (Monday Night Football)
|
Overview
The week closes with an AFC West game whose premise has been inverted. Denver went 14-3 in 2025, won the division, beat Buffalo in overtime in the divisional round, and reached the conference championship game. Kansas City went 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade after Patrick Mahomes tore an ACL late in the season.
Kansas City's offseason was aggressive. Kenneth Walker III arrived from Seattle on a record running-back deal, Justin Fields came from the Jets as insurance behind Mahomes, and Eric Bieniemy returned as offensive coordinator. The cost was on defence: both starting cornerbacks, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, signed with the Rams.
Mahomes is described as on schedule in his recovery and has not been formally ruled anything. That uncertainty is the reason a 6-11 team is favoured by three over a 14-3 team, and it is the reason this game is the hardest on the board to price.

Advanced analysis
The 2025 records overstate the gap. Kansas City's SRS was 1.9 against Denver's 3.5, a difference of 1.6 points, because the Chiefs' point differential stayed positive even at 6-11 — they lost a lot of close games without Mahomes. Denver's edge was defensive: 18.3 points allowed per game against Kansas City's 19.3, with a better rating on that side.
The specific matchup that concerns us is Kansas City's new cornerbacks against Denver's passing game. Losing McDuffie and Watson in the same offseason is a rare kind of subtraction, and Week 1 is when a rebuilt secondary is least likely to be sorted out. The total of 42.5 says the market expects a defensive game, and we agree.
Analyst commentary
We take Denver outright, which puts us six points off the market and makes this our biggest disagreement of the week. The reasoning: Denver won fourteen games and the division with the better defence and returns its head coach and quarterback, while Kansas City is asking a quarterback returning from a torn ACL to carry a secondary that lost both starters.
The honest caveat is that this call is a bet against Mahomes, and betting against Mahomes at Arrowhead on a Monday night has a poor historical record. If he is fully healthy, Kansas City is the better team and the line is correct. Our 59-41 split is not a confident call; it is a statement that the market has moved further on his return than the available information supports. If his status is formally confirmed before Thursday, this projection should be revisited.
Run notes
What was missing, and why
Sixteen games in the window, sixteen reports written, counted twice. All thirty-two teams are in action; no team is on bye in Week 1.
The league Week 1 injury page listed “No Injuries Reported” for all thirty-two teams at the time of this run. Practice reports are issued during game week. Absences in this report come from reserve-list transactions, which are settled, and from reported camp injuries, which are explicitly not designations. This affects all sixteen games and should be re-pulled on Thursday.
Aggregator consensus fields again returned inconsistent values and were left blank rather than printed. This has now failed in the preseason Week 3, Week 1 kickoff and current runs. It needs a named source rather than another attempt at the same aggregators.
Zero regular-season games have been played in 2026, so the four-game window does not exist for any team. Preseason ATS is not meaningful and prior-season records were not substituted. The full window opens in Week 5.
Rated on the schedule already played, which is empty in Week 1. Opponent winning percentage is undefined. Tiers open in Week 2 and stay provisional through Week 5.
The forecast tool returned an eight-day daily forecast by coordinate for every venue queried, which fixes the failure that left all fifteen weather fields blank in preseason Week 3 and produced a stale, location-contaminated result in the Week 1 kickoff run. Ten outdoor or retractable-roof venues were pulled, plus Melbourne. Allowlisting api.weather.gov is no longer necessary.
September 14 falls one day outside the eight-day window. Kansas City carries a trend rather than a game-time forecast and is marked as such in the game report.
Opening lines were recovered for five games from the May schedule-release odds. For the other eleven the opening number was not retained by any source consulted and the field is marked rather than filled. Capturing opening lines at release and storing them would close this permanently.
The ten confirmed 2026 head-coach hires are named. The other twenty-two teams are marked “returning” rather than named, because an unverified name is worse than no name. The ten were cross-checked against two independent lists.
Sources disagree on the face of it: the game is Thursday September 10 at 8:35 PM ET in the United States and Friday September 11 at 10:35 AM AEST in Melbourne, a seventeen-hour difference. Both are correct. The report carries the ET time in the schedule and the local time in the game report.
One aggregator described the Rams as hosting San Francisco at SoFi Stadium. The game is at the Melbourne Cricket Ground; the Rams are the designated home team only. The venue error was discarded and the odds from the same source were retained after matching them against two other books.
The sixteen-game slate was completed comfortably inside budget, unlike the preseason Week 3 run. Front-loading the schedule pull and using one consolidated odds table rather than sixteen individual lookups was the difference.
This run was compiled on Sunday September 6 as a rehearsal for the scheduled Thursday run. Odds are four days from kickoff and will move. The Gmail connector remains unavailable to this session, so nothing was emailed. |
