NFL 2026 · Week 2 · Thursday Sept 17 – Wednesday Sept 23
| Prepared Thursday, Sept 17, 2026 Sixteen games in the window All 32 teams playing — no byes | Games in this report 16 |
Sixteen games kick off between tonight and next Wednesday. Every one of them has its own report below. The slate was pulled from nfl.com, confirmed against four independent sources, filtered to the window, and the reports were counted against that list twice — before writing and before delivery.
Every game carries the Margin Meter: one scale showing where the market has set the line and where this report's predicted margin sits. Everything numerical in a game report descends from that single predicted margin. The predicted score comes first; the win probability is read off the margin using a normal curve with a 13.5-point standard deviation; the cover chance runs the same curve on the margin minus the spread. They cannot contradict each other because they are three expressions of one forecast. No single game is given better than a 90% chance.
The three must-watch games
Thursday, Sept 17, 2026 · 8:15 PM ET · Prime Video
Lions at Bills
The best pure matchup of the week and the only one between two 1-0 teams that both project as contenders. It is also the first regular-season night game in the new Highmark Stadium, on a national Thursday window, with Josh Allen throwing at his highest average depth since 2022. The line moved two points through the key number of three, which is the market conceding that Detroit's patched offensive line and short-week travel matter more than the records suggest.
Sunday, Sept 20, 2026 · 8:20 PM ET · NBC (Sunday Night Football)
Colts at Chiefs
Sunday night at Arrowhead with Kansas City close to fully healthy — Mahomes, Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy all practicing in full — against a Colts defense that surrendered 506 total yards to Lamar Jackson in Week 1. Eighty percent of the money is on the Chiefs and the line has not moved a half-point at any book, which is the market telling you it opened where it wanted to be. The most likely blowout with a national audience attached.
Monday, Sept 21, 2026 · 8:15 PM ET · ESPN and ABC (simulcast)
Giants at Rams
John Harbaugh's Giants, off a 28-20 win over Dallas in his New York debut, against a Rams team that scored seven points in Melbourne and lost the reigning Defensive Player of the Year to knee surgery the same week. Jaxson Dart's second start, on a Monday-night ABC and ESPN simulcast, at seven points. The ratings put the honest number two points lower, which makes this the most mispriced high-profile game on the board.
Two more worth recording: Jaguars at Broncos, where a team on a nine-game winning streak that sits fifth in FPI is somehow a road underdog and the line has not moved against 76% public money; and Vikings at Bears, a division game between the two highest-scoring offenses of Week 1 that the market has priced in the mid-forties because both quarterback rooms are in flux.
Schedule difficulty — league-wide, computed once
One table for all 32 teams, built here and referenced from every game report below. A team carries the same tier everywhere it appears; nothing is recomputed inside a game. The 32 teams are split into even thirds by rank — the toughest 11 are hard, the next 10 medium, the easiest 11 easy.

This is a relative ranking, not an absolute one: a “hard” tier in a flat year is easier than a “hard” tier in a top-heavy one.
One game played. These tiers are provisional until Week 5. With a single opponent each, opponent winning percentage is exactly 1.000 for every team that lost in Week 1 and .000 for every team that won — it restates your own result and nothing else. The ordering above is therefore taken from opponent FPI, with opponent win pct shown alongside as its own column; ties were broken on the opponent’s DVOA. The method reverts to opponent winning percentage once that figure carries signal. This deviation is logged in the run notes.

Detroit Lions at Buffalo Bills
New Highmark Stadium, Orchard Park, NY · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
The league opens its second week in a building that did not exist last September. This is the first regular-season night game at the new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium, and Buffalo gets it against a Detroit team that has to fly in on three days' rest with a rebuilt left side of its offensive line. Both teams are 1-0 and both won ugly: Buffalo needed a 96-yard fourth-quarter drive to beat Houston 36-31, and Detroit blew a 21-0 third-quarter lead before surviving New Orleans 31-30 in overtime. Josh Allen's 12.6 air yards per attempt in the opener was his highest figure since 2022, which tells you Joe Brady is not easing into his first season running the whole operation. Detroit's counterweight is Jahmyr Gibbs, who touched the ball 34 times for 186 scrimmage yards and forced twelve missed tackles in Week 1 - a workload that reads less like a game plan and more like a confession about the passing game's supporting cast.
Conditions
66°F, wind 1-3 mph NW, ~36% rain at kickoff. Mostly cloudy, humid, scattered showers, under 0.10 in. expected. NWS says wind should not be a factor; AccuWeather models a wetter evening. Warm and damp, not a conditions game.

Impact. Detroit's two announced absences are both starting offensive linemen, and the secondary is already carrying season-long losses at both safety spots. Buffalo, by contrast, got three Week 1 question marks cleared on Wednesday. On a short week, with travel, that asymmetry is the game.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Detroit Lions. Detroit is 1-0 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, having failed to cover as a seven-point home favorite. The Lions have played exactly one game, all of it at home, so there is no road sample yet this season. The Week 1 profile is a fast start and a near-total collapse: 21-0 up, then 30 unanswered points allowed before the overtime escape.
Buffalo Bills. Buffalo is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread as a road favorite of a point and a half. The Bills have not yet played at home this season. Their Week 1 win came on a closing drive rather than on control, and the defense gave up 31 points to a Houston team that finished 0-1.
Head to head. Bills lead the all-time series 8-4-1 in 13 meetings, and 8-2 over the last ten. Buffalo has won five straight; Detroit's last win in the series was Oct 15, 2006. Last meeting: Dec 15, 2024, Bills 48, Lions 42, at Ford Field - a shootout that fits this total.
Schedule difficulty, read from the league table above — DET: Easy (rank 22 of 32, opp win pct .000) · BUF: Hard (rank 9 of 32, opp win pct .000)
5 · Advanced Analysis
On the numbers this is closer than five points suggests. FPI has Buffalo second at +4.8 and Detroit eleventh at +1.5, a 3.3-point gap; add roughly two points of home field and you arrive at a Buffalo edge of about five, which is exactly where the market landed. DVOA is more emphatic - Buffalo fourth at +50.4%, Detroit fourteenth at +17.0% - but a one-game DVOA sample is essentially a record of who won big, and neither of these teams did. Week 1 scoring says both defenses are vulnerable: Buffalo allowed 31, Detroit allowed 30. That is the case for the Over that most of the market is not making.

ESPN FPI rating (scale -8.0 to +6.0, Sept 16)
FTN Total DVOA (scale -90% to +75%, one-game sample)
Key positional matchups
- Josh Allen against a Detroit secondary missing Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, with D.J. Reed questionable. If Reed sits, the Lions are down to depth at all three levels of the back end against the quarterback who most punishes exactly that.
- Detroit's replacement interior line (Ben Bartch, Juice Scruggs, Larry Borom) against Buffalo's interior rush. Short-week continuity problems show up first in protection calls, not in one-on-one blocks.
- Jahmyr Gibbs versus Buffalo's second-level speed. Detroit's most reliable path to controlling this game is the one that also keeps Allen on the sideline.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Buffalo is the better team, is at home, is healthier, and has the rest advantage. That is four of the four things that usually matter on a Thursday, and it is why the number moved through three. The counter-argument is that five points is a lot to lay against a team that can score 31 on anybody, in a game where both defenses just proved porous, and Detroit has covered its way through worse spots than this. The game script that beats Buffalo is Gibbs on the ground, a lead, and fewer than ten possessions apiece - which is exactly the script Detroit's patched line makes hardest to run. The likeliest version is Buffalo scoring in the high twenties or low thirties, Detroit hanging around through three quarters on Gibbs and Amon-Ra volume, and the Bills pulling away late without ever fully separating. Take the points if you have to take a side; the number is a half-point past where it should be.

Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA · Retractable
1 · Game Overview
Two 0-1 teams, one of which cannot say who is playing quarterback. Carolina arrives having lost 59-37 at home to Chicago in a game that produced 96 points and very little evidence about either defense. Atlanta lost 20-13 at Pittsburgh with Cooper Rush under center, threw an interception that T.J. Watt returned 33 yards for a touchdown, and spent the week rotating three quarterbacks through practice. Tua Tagovailoa hurt an oblique in practice before the opener and did not throw on Wednesday. Michael Penix Jr. took first-team reps off his ACL rehab and says he is close. Rush is healthy. Stefanski, in his first year in Atlanta, has committed to none of them. The market has made its own decision: a four-point swing to a Carolina team nobody liked a week ago. Note the oddity worth holding onto - Carolina scored 37 points in a loss, which is the second-most by a losing team this season.
Conditions
Indoors - weather not a factor. Roof closure is an inference, not an announcement: 87°F and scattered storms outside make a closed roof near-certain, but teams decide day-of.

Impact. Kevin Stefanski has not named a starting quarterback and said he is 'not ruling anybody out,' including undrafted rookie Jack Strand. That is the single most consequential unresolved question on the Week 2 slate, and it is why a 0-1 team that just surrendered 59 points is favored on the road.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Carolina Panthers. Carolina is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread after failing to cover as a three-point home favorite. One home game, no road sample. The defense allowed 552 yards and 59 points; the offense scored 37, which in most weeks wins. Carolina is rated Hard on schedule strength (7th toughest) precisely because Chicago is the seventh-rated team in FPI.
Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread as a 6.5-point road underdog. No home game yet. Thirteen points in the opener is the relevant number, and it was produced by the only one of the three quarterbacks who is unambiguously available.
Head to head. Atlanta leads all-time 37-25 in 62 meetings, but Carolina has won three straight - including a 30-0 shutout in Sept 2025 and a 30-27 overtime win in Atlanta on Nov 16, 2025. That 2025 sweep was Carolina's first over the Falcons since 2013. The teams have never met in the playoffs.
Schedule difficulty, read from the league table above — CAR: Hard (rank 7 of 32, opp win pct 1.000) · ATL: Medium (rank 21 of 32, opp win pct 1.000)
5 · Advanced Analysis
FPI separates these teams by three tenths of a point - Atlanta 24th at -2.5, Carolina 25th at -2.8 - which with normal home-field advantage should produce Falcons by roughly two. The market has moved four and a half points away from that, and the entire displacement is quarterback uncertainty. DVOA is louder and less trustworthy: Atlanta 28th at -48.1%, Carolina 25th at -38.2%, both distorted by single-game samples at opposite extremes of a blowout. The genuine statistical signal here is defensive: Carolina allowed 59 points and Atlanta allowed 20, but Atlanta played Pittsburgh's offense and Carolina played the team that just put up 552 yards.

ESPN FPI rating (scale -8.0 to +6.0, Sept 16)
FTN Total DVOA (scale -90% to +75%, one-game sample)
Key positional matchups
- Whoever plays quarterback for Atlanta against a Carolina secondary that was shredded a week ago. If it is Penix off an ACL, the Falcons' downfield passing returns and this line is wrong. If it is Strand, it is not.
- Carolina's offensive line without Taylor Moton against Atlanta's front. Moton has been out since July with a blood clot, and Atlanta's edge rush is thinner than it should be with Pearce suspended and Walker on IR.
- Atlanta's interior line without All-Pro guard Chris Lindstrom, in concussion protocol. The Falcons cannot run their way out of a quarterback problem with a backup at right guard.
6 · Analyst Commentary
This is the hardest game on the board to price honestly, and the honest answer is that nobody - including the market - knows who is playing quarterback. A road favorite coming off a 22-point home loss is a strange animal, and the fact that it is well-corroborated across five books rather than a single stale line makes it more interesting, not less. The case for Carolina is that Atlanta's offense scored 13 with its healthiest quarterback and gets worse from there. The case against is that Carolina's defense just allowed the most points in a Week 1 game in years, and Atlanta indoors with Penix returning is a different proposition than Atlanta at Pittsburgh with Cooper Rush. Expect a low-scoring, ugly game between two teams with real defensive questions and no offensive identity - the total falling a point supports that read. A field goal either way is the right price, and the value is on whichever side the Friday injury report makes unpopular.

New Orleans Saints at Baltimore Ravens
M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Lamar Jackson opened the Jesse Minter era with 506 total yards of offense in a 41-23 win at Indianapolis, and Derrick Henry added 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns. New Orleans, meanwhile, lost a game it had no business being in: down 21-0 in the third quarter at Detroit, Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards and the Saints lost 31-30 in overtime. That is a genuinely encouraging loss and a genuinely misleading one - 410 passing yards in a comeback attempt is a volume statistic produced by a deficit. New Orleans covered as a seven-point underdog. Baltimore covered as a three-point favorite by fifteen. Nine points is the market's way of saying the Ravens are a different class of team, and the numbers agree. The question is whether a Ravens passing game missing both of its top receivers, in front of a possible lightning delay, can produce a nine-point win rather than a six-point one.
Conditions
75-83°F, wind 9-10 mph SSE, rain/storm chance 32% at the kickoff hour rising to 67% for the day. Mostly cloudy and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. AccuWeather explicitly flags a possible lightning delay - the highest delay risk on the slate.

Impact. Baltimore's Wednesday report is long but front-loaded with veterans: Campbell was resting, and Stanley, Hendrickson and Simpson are all week-openers who frequently return by Friday. Flowers is the one that matters. With Lane already out with a fractured wrist, losing Flowers takes the top two receivers off a passing game that just produced 506 total yards.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
New Orleans Saints. New Orleans is 0-1 straight up but 1-0 against the spread, the only kind of record that makes a 0-1 team dangerous. One road game, no home sample. The 30 points scored at Detroit is the fourth-highest total by any losing team in Week 1. New Orleans is rated Hard on schedule strength (11th), having opened against a playoff-caliber Detroit team on the road.
Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering a three-point number by fifteen. No home game yet. The schedule-strength table rates Baltimore Easy (23rd) - Indianapolis is 23rd in FPI, and the Ravens' resume is currently one win over a bottom-third team.
Head to head. Baltimore leads 6-2 in eight all-time meetings; they have never met in the playoffs. Last meeting: Nov 7, 2022, Ravens 27, Saints 13, on Monday night in New Orleans. Note that this is a rotation-cycle matchup - nearly four years and two coaching staffs removed - so the head-to-head record carries very little predictive weight.

FPI has Baltimore third at +4.8 and New Orleans 22nd at -1.5, a 6.3-point gap that becomes roughly 8.3 with home field - almost exactly the posted number, which is unusual and suggests the market is efficient here. DVOA agrees in direction and overstates in magnitude (Baltimore 3rd at +64.9%, New Orleans 23rd at -26.1%). The offensive comparison is not close: Baltimore put 41 on a defense that is not good, and New Orleans allowed 31 to a Detroit team that scored its last ten in the fourth quarter and overtime. The real uncertainty is on Baltimore's side of the injury report, not in the ratings.

Key positional matchups
- Derrick Henry against a New Orleans front that allowed Jahmyr Gibbs 156 rushing yards. If Flowers sits, this is the entire Baltimore game plan, and New Orleans has not shown it can stop it.
- Tyler Shough against Baltimore's secondary. Shough's 410 yards came against a defense playing with a three-score lead; he will not get that volume of soft coverage here.
- Baltimore's left tackle spot if Ronnie Stanley cannot go, against Cameron Jordan and a Saints pass rush that is itself banged up. A mutual weakness, which usually favors the better quarterback.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Baltimore is clearly the better team and the market has priced that correctly, which is the problem with laying 8.5. Nine points requires a two-score win plus margin, and the injury news is running against the Ravens' ability to produce one: Flowers did not practice, Lane is out with a fractured wrist, and the left tackle did not practice either. A Ravens offense reduced to Henry and Jackson improvising is still very good, but it is a grind-it-out good, not a cover-by-fifteen good. Add a realistic chance of a weather delay and the game script tilts toward fewer possessions and a tighter margin. New Orleans covered last week getting seven, and Tyler Shough has now shown he will keep throwing when the game gets away. Expect Baltimore to control this comfortably and to win by a touchdown rather than by two - the kind of result that wins the moneyline and loses the ticket. The Under is the more crowded and probably more correct position: the model lands on 47 exactly, which is a push, not an edge.

Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears
Soldier Field, Chicago, IL · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Caleb Williams put up the kind of Week 1 that resets expectations - 200-plus passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 50-plus rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, the first Bear ever to do all four in a game - in a 59-37 win at Carolina that produced 552 yards of offense. Minnesota's opener was almost as strange in the other direction: down twelve in the third quarter to Green Bay, the Vikings won 39-22, becoming the first team in NFL history to trail by twelve or more inside the final twenty minutes and win by seventeen or more. Brian Flores blitzed on 78.3% of snaps to do it. Both teams are 1-0, both scored in the high thirties or better, and the market still expects a game in the mid-forties - because Minnesota is starting Carson Wentz, because a lake wind is blowing, and because neither of those Week 1 offensive explosions came against a defense that will be good in December.
Conditions
67-69°F, wind 11-14 mph NE (breezy), rain chance 30% at kickoff rising to 60% for the day. Cloudy with occasional rain and a possible thunderstorm. The onshore northeast wind off the lake is the only meaningful wind on the slate and is relevant to field goals and deep passing.

Impact. Minnesota loses its starting quarterback and its starting running back in the same week - Murray to concussion protocol, Mason to injured reserve with a fractured thumb. Chicago's counterpart problem is quieter but real: both of the backs who ran for 100 yards in Week 1 were limited on Wednesday, and the starting right tackle did not practice.

Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering a 1.5-point home number by fifteen and a half. One home game, no road sample. The Vikings are rated Medium on schedule strength (14th). The comeback was real; the quarterback who finished it, Carson Wentz, is the one who starts Sunday, having thrown a 39-yard touchdown to Justin Jefferson in relief.
Chicago Bears. Chicago is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering a three-point road number by nineteen. No home game yet. The Bears are rated Easy on schedule strength (25th) - Carolina is 25th in FPI, and the 59-point outburst has to be read against that. Chicago has won one straight in this series.
Head to head. Minnesota leads the all-time series 69-59-2 across 129 regular-season meetings; Chicago won the only playoff game. Minnesota is 8-2 in the last ten. Chicago won the most recent meeting, Nov 16, 2025, 19-17 in Minneapolis, snapping a run in which the Vikings had taken eight of nine - including the Sept 2025 opener at Soldier Field.

FPI has Chicago seventh at +2.6 and Minnesota 18th at -0.7, a 3.3-point gap that becomes about 5.3 with home field - a hair under the posted five and a half. DVOA has Chicago seventh at +38.7% and Minnesota fifteenth at +14.0%, directionally the same. The Week 1 scoring comparison is inflated on both sides: Chicago's 59 came against the 25th-rated team in the league and Minnesota's 39 against a Green Bay team missing Micah Parsons. The defensive numbers are the more honest ones, and they are not good: Chicago allowed 37, Minnesota allowed 22 to a team playing without its best defender.

Key positional matchups
- Carson Wentz against Brian Flores' opposite number - which is to say, against a Chicago defense that just allowed 37 points but did so while the offense was scoring 59. Wentz's history is that he is fine with a lead and volatile without one.
- Chicago's backfield health against Minnesota's front seven. Swift and Monangai both went for 100 yards in Week 1 and both were limited Wednesday; if either is compromised, Chicago's play-action base narrows.
- The wind. Eleven to fourteen miles per hour off the lake is not a howling gale, but it is enough to matter on field goals from beyond 45 and on the deep shots both of these offenses used to produce their Week 1 point totals.
6 · Analyst Commentary
This is the game where two enormous Week 1 point totals meet a total of 48.5 and a market that is overwhelmingly betting the Under - 90% of tickets, 86% of money, the most one-sided total position of the week. That consensus is defensible: Wentz replaces Murray, Mason is on IR, the wind is up, rain is likely, and both of those offensive explosions came against bottom-ten opponents. Chicago is the better team here and should win, but five points against a division opponent that just proved it can win a game it had no business winning is not a comfortable number. The game script that produces a Chicago cover is Williams extending plays and the Bears running effectively - which requires Swift and Monangai to be closer to full than Wednesday suggested. The script that produces a Minnesota cover is Flores blitzing a young quarterback in bad weather and keeping the game in the twenties. Both are live. Chicago by a touchdown is the center of the distribution, and the Under is the better-supported position of the two.

Cincinnati Bengals at Houston Texans
Reliant Stadium (renamed from NRG for 2026), Houston, TX · Retractable
1 · Game Overview
Cincinnati opened with a 33-27 win over Tampa Bay; Houston lost 36-31 at home to Buffalo after leading in the fourth quarter. Both games produced roughly 60 points, and both defenses left the week with questions. The line has not moved off Houston -2.5 all week, which in a market this noisy is itself a signal - the books have this as close to a pure home-field game between two teams FPI rates within three tenths of a point of each other. What separates them by Sunday is health at the skill positions: Burrow is limited but expected, Collins is limited and genuinely at risk. Cincinnati sits tenth in FPI and fourth in NFL.com's power ranking, the widest gap between model and editorial opinion for any team on the slate, which is another way of saying nobody is quite sure how good the Bengals are.

Impact. Two soft-tissue questions define this game. Burrow has back soreness and says he will play, which is close to dispositive. Nico Collins' hamstring is not close to dispositive - ESPN's sourcing has his Week 2 availability 'in jeopardy,' and with Tank Dell already on IR, Houston's receiving corps thins out fast behind him.

Cincinnati Bengals. Cincinnati is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering a 3.5-point home number. One home game, no road sample. The Bengals are rated Medium on schedule strength (17th). Thirty-three points against Tampa Bay is the offensive baseline; 27 allowed is the defensive one, and the second number is the reason this is only a field-goal game.
Houston Texans. Houston is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover as a 1.5-point home favorite. One home game, no road sample. The Texans are rated Hard on schedule strength (3rd toughest) - they opened against the second-rated team in FPI. Thirty-one points against Buffalo is genuinely good; 36 allowed is not.

This is the closest matchup on the board by the numbers. FPI has Houston eighth at +1.9 and Cincinnati tenth at +1.6 - a three-tenths gap. Add home field and you get Houston by roughly 2.3, and the market posted 2.5. DVOA disagrees sharply and should be discounted: Cincinnati twelfth at +26.2%, Houston 22nd at -20.2%, a spread produced entirely by the fact that one team won a shootout and the other lost one. The relevant asymmetry is not in the ratings, it is that Houston's passing game may be missing its number one receiver while Cincinnati's quarterback is merely sore.

ESPN FPI rating (scale -8.0 to +6.0, Sept 16)
FTN Total DVOA (scale -90% to +75%, one-game sample)
Key positional matchups
- Joe Burrow's back against a Houston pass rush that still has Will Anderson Jr. A quarterback managing back soreness is a quarterback less willing to hold the ball, which cuts both ways - fewer sacks, shorter throws.
- Houston's receiving depth if Nico Collins cannot go. With Tank Dell on IR, the Texans would be asking unproven players to win against a Bengals secondary that allowed 27 points but generated the turnover that decided Week 1.
- Both interior defensive lines indoors on a fast surface. B.J. Hill rested Wednesday and Jadeveon Clowney did not practice; neither absence is likely to hold, but both fronts are thinner than their reputations.
6 · Analyst Commentary
A pick-'em game dressed as a two-and-a-half-point game, and the honest forecast is close to a coin flip with a slight lean to the home side. The line's total immobility all week - -2.5 at every book, no movement from the opener - tells you the books see it the same way. The single most actionable fact is Nico Collins' hamstring: if he is out, Houston's offense loses its only proven downfield threat and this line should be a pick-'em or better for Cincinnati. If he plays, Houston at home against a Bengals defense that gave up 27 is the right favorite. Indoors, on turf, with two offenses that just combined for 60-plus points each, the Over is the more comfortable side of the total than the crowded ticket count suggests. Take the points with Cincinnati; the number is a touch past where the underlying ratings put it, and the injury risk sits with the favorite.

Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots
Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Pittsburgh won its opener 20-13 over Atlanta in Mike McCarthy's first game, on a 33-yard T.J. Watt pick-six that made Watt and Julius Peppers the only players since 1982 with 100 sacks and 10 interceptions. New England lost 13-10 at Seattle in a Super Bowl LX rematch, then lost A.J. Brown to injured reserve. Both offenses have now produced fewer than 21 points, the weather forecast calls for four hours of rain, and the total has been marked down two points to 41.5 - the second-lowest number on the board. This is going to be a slow, physical, low-possession football game, which is precisely the environment in which a five-and-a-half-point spread is hardest to cover.
Conditions
63°F, wind 5-6 mph SE, rain chance 41% at kickoff rising to 88% for the day, roughly four hours of it. The coolest and one of the wettest games on the slate.

Impact. A.J. Brown to injured reserve is the biggest offensive loss on the Week 2 slate. New England's passing game loses its number one target for a minimum of four games, and one follow-up report suggests longer. The partial offset is TreVeyon Henderson practicing in full and in line for his season debut - a running back, not a receiver, which changes the shape of the offense rather than replacing what it lost.

The Steelers are rated Easy on schedule strength (24th) - Atlanta is 24th in FPI. Twenty points is the offensive baseline; 13 allowed is a genuinely good defensive number and DVOA has Pittsburgh eighth overall despite FPI's 21st.
New England Patriots. New England is 0-1 straight up but 1-0 against the spread, covering as a 3.5-point road underdog in a three-point loss. One road game, no home sample. The Patriots are rated Easy on schedule strength (27th) by the opponent-quality method used here, though that rating is an artifact of Seattle's low FPI rather than of an easy opener - Seattle won the Super Bowl seven months ago.
Head to head. New England leads 19-17 overall; Pittsburgh leads the regular-season series 16-15, and New England is 4-1 in playoff meetings. Pittsburgh won the most recent game, Sept 21, 2025, 21-14 at Gillette Stadium, snapping a three-game New England run in the series.

FPI has New England twelfth at +1.5 and Pittsburgh 21st at -1.5, a three-point gap that becomes about five with home field - roughly the posted number, before adjusting for A.J. Brown. DVOA flatly disagrees, rating Pittsburgh eighth at +36.4% and New England seventeenth at -9.2%, and in this specific case DVOA's one-game bias is less damaging than usual because both games were low-scoring and close. The scoring comparison favors Pittsburgh: 20 points scored and 13 allowed versus 10 scored and 13 allowed. New England's offense has now lost its best player since that game was played.

Key positional matchups
- T.J. Watt against New England's tackles, one of whom (Dametrious Crownover) did not practice. Watt already has a defensive touchdown this season and is facing an offense that will be one-dimensional without Brown.
- TreVeyon Henderson's possible debut against a Pittsburgh run defense that held Atlanta to 13 points. If Henderson plays, New England has a way to move the ball that does not require winning downfield.
- Both passing games in four hours of rain. Wet-ball conditions compress the field and reward whoever can run - which currently looks more like New England with Henderson than Pittsburgh without a settled run game.
6 · Analyst Commentary
The market thinks New England is five and a half points better at home. The underlying evidence thinks the gap is closer to three, and every situational factor is pushing in Pittsburgh's direction: A.J. Brown is gone for a month, the weather is wet, the total has been marked down two points, and the Steelers' defense is the more proven unit. New England should still win - FPI likes them, they are at home, and Pittsburgh's offense scored 20 against a bad Atlanta team - but a wet, low-scoring game between two defense-first teams is the classic profile for a favorite winning by three or four. The 78% of tickets on the Under are right. Take Pittsburgh and the points; the value is on the dog and the number should be closer to a field goal than a touchdown. The version of this that goes badly for Pittsburgh is Henderson debuting and New England running for 150 in the rain.

Green Bay Packers at New York Jets
MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Two teams heading in opposite directions from their openers, meeting in what looks like eight hours of rain. Green Bay blew a twelve-point third-quarter lead at Minnesota and lost 39-22 - the wrong end of the first game in NFL history in which a team trailed by twelve-plus inside twenty minutes and won by seventeen-plus. The Jets went to Tennessee and won 23-10, with rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq scoring on an end-around to become the second tight end ever with a rushing touchdown in his NFL debut, and No. 1 overall pick David Bailey generating six pressures. FPI still rates Green Bay fourteenth and the Jets 28th. DVOA, which only knows about one game, has the Jets sixth and Green Bay 21st. The market has split the difference and then moved a full point toward the home underdog. This is the game on the slate where the models disagree most violently.
Conditions
69-70°F, wind 7-9 mph SSE, rain chance 32% at the kickoff hour but 97% across the day, with roughly eight hours of it. This is the wettest game of the week - steady all-day rain rather than a passing shower, and the only game where sustained wet-ball conditions are likely rather than merely possible.

Impact. Green Bay's defensive line report is the story: Parsons is out for at least a month with a torn ACL and four more front-seven players were limited Wednesday, three of them interior linemen and two in concussion protocol. A pass rush without Parsons, in the rain, against an offense that will run the ball, is a very different unit from the one the Packers planned around.

The Packers are rated Medium on schedule strength (18th). Twenty-two points scored, 39 allowed, and the best defensive player lost for a month - none of that is a good trend line.
New York Jets. The Jets are 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering as a 1.5-point road underdog by fourteen and a half. One road game, no home sample. The Jets are rated Easy on schedule strength (30th) - Tennessee is 30th in FPI and 32nd in DVOA, so the win should be discounted heavily. FPI: Green Bay fourteenth at +1.1, Jets 28th at -3.2 - a 4.3-point gap that becomes about 2.3 after home field, which is a point and a half under the posted line. DVOA: Jets sixth at +40.2%, Green Bay 21st at -19.0% - a gap that would make the Jets a home favorite. FPI is the more stable input this early because it carries a preseason prior; DVOA at one game is close to a record of scoreboard margins. The truthful reading is that Green Bay is probably the better roster and the Jets are probably better than 28th, and the game is closer to a field goal than to four and a half points.

Key positional matchups
- Green Bay's pass rush without Micah Parsons against a Jets offensive line in the rain. Take away the Packers' best defender and this becomes a game about winning at the line of scrimmage with ordinary players.
- The Jets' secondary if Minkah Fitzpatrick's groin keeps him out. Fitzpatrick is the Jets' most important defensive back and did not practice Wednesday.
- Eight hours of rain against two offenses that both want to throw. The team that adapts first - and that has the healthier interior offensive line - wins this. Green Bay's Aaron Banks was limited Wednesday.
6 · Analyst Commentary
A road favorite that just lost by seventeen, missing its best defensive player, in the rain, against a home team coming off a two-score road win. Every element of the situation argues for the Jets, and the line has already moved a point in their direction. The counterweight is that the Jets beat the worst team in the league by DVOA and the Packers lost to a good one. That is not nothing, and FPI's 4.3-point gap is a real assessment built on more than one week. Expect a low-scoring, sloppy game decided by field position and turnovers - the eight-hour rain forecast makes ball security the dominant variable, and both offenses are missing interior line pieces. Green Bay by a field goal is the center of the distribution, which makes 3.5 close to a true pick-'em and gives the Jets modest value with the hook. The Under is the strongest position in the game and the market knows it: 83% of tickets, 81% of money.

Cleveland Browns at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Cleveland lost 34-10 at Jacksonville in a game that went wrong immediately - Deshaun Watson threw an interception on his third attempt, the line allowed five sacks, and new head coach Todd Monken's debut was graded an F. The Browns now sit 31st in FPI at -7.1 and 31st in DVOA at -75.6%, the second-worst numbers in the league by both systems, and they travel to Tampa in near-100-degree RealFeel heat. Tampa Bay lost 33-27 at Cincinnati but did so as a competitive road underdog and has emerged with the healthiest roster in football. Eight and a half points is a wide number this early in a season, and the market's conviction is unusual: 91% of the money is on the Buccaneers. That is the sort of consensus that is either obviously right or expensively wrong, and here it looks obviously right.
Conditions
86-88°F, wind 4-7 mph ESE, 70-73% thunderstorm chance. Mostly cloudy and humid, afternoon thunderstorm lasting roughly an hour. RealFeel 103°F - heat and humidity are the story rather than the storm.

Impact. Tampa Bay has the cleanest injury report in the NFL - one limited safety in concussion protocol and nothing else. Cleveland's report is short but concentrated in exactly the wrong place: three of the five names are interior offensive linemen, in front of a quarterback who allowed five sacks in Week 1.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Cleveland Browns. Cleveland is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover as an 8.5-point road underdog by fifteen and a half. One road game, no home sample. The Browns are rated Hard on schedule strength (5th) - Jacksonville is fifth in FPI - which is the most charitable available reading of the opener. Ten points scored and 34 allowed is the least productive two-way line in the league through one week.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover as a 3.5-point road underdog by two and a half. One road game, no home sample. The Buccaneers are rated Hard on schedule strength (10th) - Cincinnati is tenth in FPI. Twenty-seven points on the road against a 1-0 team is a respectable offensive baseline.
Head to head. Cleveland leads the all-time series 7-4 in eleven meetings and the teams have split the last eight 4-4; they have never met in the playoffs. Last meeting: Nov 27, 2022, Browns 23, Buccaneers 17 in overtime, in Cleveland. Four years and near-total roster turnover ago.

The largest ratings gap in this game is also the most reliable, because both systems agree. FPI: Tampa Bay seventeenth at -0.0, Cleveland 31st at -7.1 - a 7.1-point gap that becomes about 9.1 with home field, half a point above the posted line. DVOA: Tampa Bay eighteenth at -11.6%, Cleveland 31st at -75.6%. When FPI and DVOA agree at one game, which is rare, it usually means the difference is large enough to survive a small sample. Cleveland's offensive problems - five sacks allowed, an early interception, ten points - are structural rather than variance.

Key positional matchups
- Cleveland's interior offensive line, with Teven Jenkins out and Elgton Jenkins and Parker Brailsford limited, against Tampa Bay's front. Watson was sacked five times behind a healthier version of this group.
- Heat and travel. Cleveland arrives from a cool-weather city into RealFeel 103 for a one o'clock kickoff. Rotation depth matters, and the Browns' is not good.
- Tampa Bay's offense against a Cleveland defense that is, for what it is worth, the least bad part of the team. The Browns allowed 34 to Jacksonville but Jacksonville is genuinely good.
6 · Analyst Commentary
This is the most confident forecast on the slate that is not the 49ers game, and it is confident for boring reasons: one team is rated 31st by both major systems, is starting a quarterback who was sacked five times and graded out as the week's worst, is missing interior offensive linemen, and is traveling into oppressive heat. Nothing about that profile improves in a week. Eight and a half is a wide number but it is the correct number, and the model lands two and a half points past it. The way Cleveland covers is a low-possession slog that keeps the score in the teens - which the total falling to 41 and the 84% Under consensus suggest the market considers likely. That is the real risk to laying the points: not that Cleveland is good, but that neither team scores enough for a two-score margin to materialize. Tampa Bay by ten or eleven is the center; the Under is the safer expression of the same view.
Game 9 of 16 · Sunday, Sept 20, 2026 · 1:00 PM ET · FOX
Philadelphia Eagles at Tennessee Titans
Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Tennessee is the worst-rated team in football by DVOA at -88.3% and 30th by FPI, lost 23-10 at home to the Jets in Robert Saleh's debut, and drew an F grade for the effort. Philadelphia won 24-22 over Washington but failed to cover as a 5.5-point favorite and lost its Pro Bowl left guard to injured reserve in the aftermath. The market has not budged off Eagles -7 all week while the total has fallen two full points to 39.5, the lowest number on the board. Ninety-four to ninety-eight degrees with a RealFeel of 107 is the defining condition: Philadelphia arrives from the low sixties, plays a physical, personnel-heavy style, and now has a patched interior offensive line. Heat makes games shorter, slower and closer than talent alone suggests, which is the most compelling argument against laying a touchdown here.
Conditions
94-98°F, wind 4-5 mph SW, 14-21% precipitation. Sunshine and near-record heat, RealFeel 107°F. AccuWeather uses the phrase 'dangerous heat.' The largest conditioning factor of the week, and Philadelphia travels in from far cooler weather. This is Tennessee's final season in the current open-air Nissan Stadium.

Impact. Philadelphia's report is almost entirely defensive - Jalen Carter and Cooper DeJean both sat Wednesday - with the notable exception of Landon Dickerson, whose knee reaggravation puts a Pro Bowl guard on injured reserve for a month. Tennessee, for once, is healthy. In 98-degree heat, the healthier team with the shorter travel has an advantage that does not appear in any rating system.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia is 1-0 straight up but 0-1 against the spread, winning by two as a 5.5-point home favorite. One home game, no road sample. The Eagles are rated Medium on schedule strength (19th). The recurring Week 1 pattern was a good team not putting away a worse one - which is exactly the pattern that loses a seven-point road spread.
Tennessee Titans. Tennessee is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover as a 1.5-point home favorite in a thirteen-point loss. One home game, no road sample. The Titans are rated Easy on schedule strength (28th). Ten points scored is the second-lowest figure in the league, and 23 allowed against the Jets is not a defensive alibi.
Head to head. Philadelphia leads the all-time series 8-5 in thirteen meetings, a figure that includes the franchise's Houston Oilers era; they have never met in the playoffs. Last meeting: Dec 4, 2022, Eagles 35, Titans 10, in Philadelphia - the game in which A.J. Brown, now a Patriot, went for 119 yards and two touchdowns against his former team.

FPI has Philadelphia thirteenth at +1.3 and Tennessee 30th at -5.4 - a 6.7-point gap that becomes about 4.7 after Tennessee's home field, more than two points inside the posted seven. DVOA is far more severe on Tennessee (32nd at -88.3%) but a single 23-10 home loss is exactly the sort of game that generates an extreme one-week DVOA figure. Both systems agree Philadelphia is substantially better. Neither supports laying a full touchdown on the road in dangerous heat with a replacement left guard.

Key positional matchups
- Philadelphia's interior line without Landon Dickerson, with Drew Kendall stepping in, against a Tennessee front that is healthy for the first time in weeks. The Eagles' running game is built on interior displacement.
- Heat and roster rotation. Philadelphia plays a heavy, physical brand of football and is traveling from cooler weather into RealFeel 107. Tennessee is acclimatised and has fresher legs by the fourth quarter.
- Tennessee's offense against a Philadelphia defense missing Jalen Carter and Cooper DeJean on Wednesday. If either sits Sunday, the Titans have a path to the eighteen or twenty points they need to keep this within the number.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Ninety-four percent of the money is on Philadelphia, and Philadelphia is comfortably the better team - the question is only whether they are seven points better on the road in dangerous heat with a Pro Bowl guard on injured reserve. The ratings say no: FPI's implied line is closer to five. Tennessee is genuinely bad, but bad teams at home in extreme conditions against travelling favorites cover this number more often than the ticket count suggests. The game script that produces an Eagles cover is Jalen Hurts and the run game controlling the clock and building a three-score lead by the third quarter, before the heat matters. The script that produces a Titans cover is a 17-13 slog in which both offenses stall and Philadelphia's depth wilts. Given the total has been marked down to 39.5 - the lowest on the board - the market itself is forecasting the second script while betting the first. Take the points. Philadelphia wins, by less than seven.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Denver Broncos
Empower Field at Mile High, Denver, CO · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
Jacksonville has now won nine consecutive games dating to last season, opened 2026 with a 34-10 dismantling of Cleveland, sits fifth in FPI at +3.4 and second in DVOA at +67.7% - and is a road underdog. Denver lost 31-10 at Kansas City, sits twentieth in FPI at -1.4 and 24th in DVOA, and is favored. That inversion is entirely about Mile High: altitude and home field are worth more in Denver than anywhere else in the league, and the books have priced roughly five and a half points of it. The public is not buying, putting 76% of its money on the Jaguars, and the line has not moved a tick. When heavy public money fails to move a number, the books are usually telling you something. Note the other oddity: NFL.com's editorial power ranking has Denver sixth, twelve spots better than FPI, the largest model-versus-human disagreement on the board.
Conditions
75°F, wind 4-5 mph, 27% at the kickoff hour rising to 55% for the day. Partly sunny with a possible pop-up afternoon thunderstorm of about half an hour. Altitude, as always in Denver, is the real environmental variable.

Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering an 8.5-point home number by fifteen and a half, and has won nine straight games counting last season. One home game, no road sample. The Jaguars are rated Easy on schedule strength (31st) - Cleveland is 31st in FPI, so the opener proves less than the scoreline suggests. Jacksonville has won one straight in this series.
Denver Broncos. Denver is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover as a 2.5-point road underdog in a 21-point loss. One road game, no home sample. The Broncos are rated Hard on schedule strength (4th toughest) - Kansas City is fourth in FPI - which is the strongest available defence of a 31-10 loss. Ten points scored is a genuine problem.
Head to head. The only dead-even series on the slate: 8-8 all-time, 7-7 in the regular season plus a 1-1 playoff split. Last meeting: Dec 21, 2025, Jaguars 34, Broncos 20, in Denver - a result that reads as directly relevant given both rosters are largely intact.

FPI has Jacksonville fifth at +3.4 and Denver twentieth at -1.4, a 4.8-point gap. Denver's home field plus altitude is worth roughly two and a half to three points, which still leaves Jacksonville as a two-point road favorite on paper - a full five points from where the market sits. DVOA is even more lopsided (Jacksonville second, Denver 24th) and even less trustworthy at one game. This is the largest disagreement between the ratings and the posted line on the entire slate. Either the market knows something about Denver that the models do not, or this is the week's best underdog price.

ESPN FPI rating (scale -8.0 to +6.0, Sept 16)

Key positional matchups
- Trevor Lawrence against a Denver secondary at altitude. Jacksonville's nine-game winning streak has been built on efficient, low-variance offense; Denver's pass defense is the strongest remaining part of a team that scored ten points.
- Denver's offense against a Jacksonville defense that allowed ten points in Week 1. The Broncos need to find twenty points somewhere, and both their listed skill-position absences - Mims and Harvey - are on that side of the ball.
- Altitude and the fourth quarter. Visiting teams at Mile High historically fade late. Jacksonville is coming off a comfortable win with a full week of rest, which is the best possible preparation for it.
6 · Analyst Commentary
The most interesting price on the board. Every objective measure says Jacksonville is substantially the better team - fifth in FPI, second in DVOA, nine straight wins, nobody ruled out on the injury report - and yet the Jaguars are getting points, and the line has not moved a half-point against 76% of the public money. That combination deserves respect: it means the books are willing to take the Jacksonville action. The honest counter-arguments are that the Jaguars' 34-10 win came against the 31st-rated team in the league, that Denver's 31-10 loss came against the fourth-rated one, and that Mile High is the single largest home-field environment in football. Weigh those properly and Jacksonville is still the side. Expect a closer game than either team's opener - Denver's defense is better than a 31-point surrender suggests, and Jacksonville's offense is efficient rather than explosive. Jacksonville by a field goal is the center of the distribution, which makes taking the 2.5 points the clearest value on the slate. Denver's chance of covering as the favorite is roughly one in three.

Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA · Fixed translucent canopy, open sides
1 · Game Overview
The Chargers were the biggest against-the-spread loss of Week 1, favored by nine and a half at home and beaten 26-14 by Arizona, while losing multiple defenders and receivers during the game. Las Vegas, under new head coach Klint Kubiak, won 27-13 over Miami in a debut graded an A. And yet the Chargers are laying six and a half, because FPI still rates them fifteenth at +0.3 and Las Vegas 29th at -3.6, and because Los Angeles has won four straight in this series by an average of thirteen points. DVOA violently disagrees, placing the Raiders tenth at +26.7% and the Chargers 27th at -46.7%. A 24-point gap between the two systems on the same pair of teams is the definition of a game where the sample is too small to trust either one.

Las Vegas Raiders. Las Vegas is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering a three-point home number by eleven. One home game, no road sample. The Raiders are rated Easy on schedule strength - 32nd, the easiest in the league, because Miami is 32nd in FPI. That is the strongest available caution against the Week 1 result. Las Vegas has lost four straight in this series.
Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers are 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover a 9.5-point home number by twenty-one and a half - the worst ATS result of Week 1. One home game, no road sample. The Chargers are rated Easy on schedule strength (26th) - Arizona is 26th in FPI, which makes the loss worse rather than better.
Head to head. Las Vegas leads the all-time series 69-62-2 across 132 meetings including a 1-0 playoff edge, but the Chargers are 7-3 in the last ten and have won four straight - Sept 2024, Jan 2025, Sept 2025 and Nov 30, 2025 - the last three by 11, 11 and 17 points. The scoring comparison favors Las Vegas (27 scored, 13 allowed versus 14 scored, 26 allowed), but the Raiders beat the league's worst-rated team and the Chargers lost to a team that just went into their building and won. The health comparison clearly favors Las Vegas: four Chargers non-participants against two for the Raiders, and Jeanty practicing in full.

Key positional matchups
- Ashton Jeanty against a Chargers front missing Teair Tart and with Dalvin Tomlinson limited. If Las Vegas can run, this becomes the low-possession game that keeps them inside the number.
- Brock Bowers' availability. A returning star tight end against a Chargers secondary without Elijah Molden is the Raiders' most efficient path to points.
- The Chargers' right tackle spot with Trey Pipkins III not practicing, against Las Vegas' edge rush. Los Angeles allowed pressure to decide Week 1 and has not gotten healthier since.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Six and a half points is a lot to lay with a team that just lost by twelve at home as a nine-and-a-half-point favorite and then produced four non-participants on Wednesday. The case for the Chargers rests almost entirely on FPI's preseason prior and on a four-game series streak in which they have beaten the Raiders convincingly every time. Those are real, but they are also the two pieces of evidence that are slowest to update. Everything current - health, momentum, coaching debut, DVOA - points at Las Vegas. Discount the Raiders' win appropriately: Miami is the worst-rated team in football and the Raiders' schedule-strength rating is the easiest in the league for exactly that reason. The result is a game the Chargers should win but should not cover. Expect something in the 24-20 range with the Raiders hanging around into the fourth quarter. Take Las Vegas and the points; the number is two full points past where the ratings put it.

Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals
State Farm Stadium, Glendale, AZ · Retractable
1 · Game Overview
The defending Super Bowl champions have lost their quarterback and are still favored on the road, which tells you how the market reads Seattle's defense. Sam Darnold left the Week 1 opener on the first drive with a hip injury; Drew Lock, 2-8 as a career starter before that night, came in and won a 13-10 game against New England on the back of a late interception barrage. Arizona, meanwhile, opened by upsetting the Chargers 26-14 as a double-digit underdog, making Mike LaFleur the first non-interim Cardinals head coach to win his debut since Don Coryell in 1973. Jacoby Brissett threw for 277 yards. The line has moved a point and a half toward Arizona on the Darnold news, and the total has dropped two and a half - the largest total move of the week. Both of those adjustments are rational. The nine-game Seattle winning streak in this series is the piece of context the numbers do not contain.
Conditions
Indoors - weather not a factor. Outside temperature 100°F; the roof will almost certainly be closed, though closure is an inference rather than an announcement.

The direction is notable: Seattle lost its starting quarterback this week and the line moved toward the home team, which is what you would expect - but several aggregators have reported the causation backwards, and those accounts should be disregarded. |

Impact. Sam Darnold is ruled out with a hip and glute tendon injury, potentially for four to six weeks, and Drew Lock starts - the most consequential confirmed absence of the Sunday slate. Arizona's long DNP list is misleading: three of the four non-participants are veteran rest days. The Cardinals' real problem is that both of their top running backs are on injured reserve, Benson for the season.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Seattle Seahawks. Seattle is 1-0 straight up but 0-1 against the spread, winning by three as a 3.5-point favorite. One home game, no road sample. The Seahawks are rated Medium on schedule strength (12th). Thirteen points scored is the relevant offensive figure and it was produced with Lock playing most of the game; ten points allowed is why they won anyway. NFL.com ranks Seattle first; FPI ranks them 27th - the widest model-versus-editorial gap on the board in the other direction from Denver.
Arizona Cardinals. Arizona is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering as a 9.5-point road underdog by twenty-one and a half - the largest ATS win of Week 1. One road game, no home sample. The Cardinals are rated Medium on schedule strength (15th). Twenty-six points on the road is a good offensive baseline, but it was produced before both starting running backs were on injured reserve.
Head to head. The most lopsided active streak on the slate. Seattle leads 31-22-1 in 54 regular-season meetings and has won nine consecutive games in the series dating to January 2022, including both 2025 meetings (23-20 in Arizona, 44-22 in Seattle). Arizona has not beaten Seattle since Nov 21, 2021. The teams have never met in the playoffs.

FPI has these teams essentially level - Seattle 27th at -3.0, Arizona 26th at -2.9 - which with Arizona's home field would make the Cardinals a two-point favorite. The market has Seattle laying four, a six-point disagreement, and it has that view while knowing Darnold is out. That gap is the Seattle defense, which FPI's roster-based approach appears to be undervaluing badly: the Seahawks won a Super Bowl seven months ago and just held New England to ten points with a backup quarterback. DVOA sees it, ranking Seattle ninth at +29.2% and Arizona thirteenth at +18.8%. When DVOA and the market agree against FPI, on a defending champion, the FPI number is the one to doubt.

Key positional matchups
- Drew Lock against an Arizona defense that just held the Chargers to fourteen points. Lock's career record is poor and his Week 1 performance was game-managed rather than good; Seattle will ask him to avoid losing this, not to win it.
- Arizona's running game without James Conner and Trey Benson, both on injured reserve, against the Seattle front. The Cardinals have to be one-dimensional, against the wrong defense to be one-dimensional against.
- Trey McBride's usage. Arizona's All-Pro tight end rested Wednesday and is the Cardinals' most reliable answer to Seattle's coverage - and, with the backfield gutted, possibly the offense's focal point.
6 · Analyst Commentary
A low-scoring defensive game with two compromised offenses, and the market has told you so by dropping the total two and a half points to 41. Seattle's quarterback is a career backup; Arizona's running backs are both on injured reserve. The nine-game series streak matters more than usual here because it is not ancient history - it includes both 2025 meetings and a 44-22 win ten months ago, with much of the same defensive personnel. The counter-case is genuine: Arizona is at home, the Cardinals just won as a double-digit dog, Mike LaFleur's offense looked functional, and FPI rates these teams as equals. But FPI has Seattle 27th while NFL.com has them first, and a team that won a Super Bowl in February and a game 13-10 with its backup in September is not the 27th-best team in football. Expect something in the 20-17 range with the Under the strongest position in the game - which makes the 80% Over consensus the most questionable public position on the slate. Seattle by a field goal; the four points are roughly fair and lean slightly to Arizona.

Washington Commanders at Dallas Cowboys
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX · Retractable
1 · Game Overview
Two 0-1 division rivals in a game the market has priced as the highest-scoring of the Sunday slate. Dallas lost 28-20 at the Giants in John Harbaugh's New York debut, an outcome nobody had on their card. Washington lost 24-22 at Philadelphia and covered as a 5.5-point underdog, which is the more encouraging of the two defeats. The Cowboys are home, indoors, and favored by four, with a defense missing its starting strong safety and starting linebacker and an offensive line missing an All-Pro guard and a center. The total has not moved a tick off 50.5 all week - the only static total on the board - while 91% of the tickets pile onto the Under. That is a market saying the number is right and a public saying it is not, and the public is usually the one that is wrong about totals in games between two offenses that both scored in the twenties.

Impact. Dallas is short two starting defenders who both left Week 1 injured - Hooker with a fractured forearm requiring surgery, Overshown with a hamstring strain - on top of an All-Pro left guard and a center already on injured reserve. Washington's report is longer but softer: Luvu and Okonkwo are the two real absence risks, and Dorance Armstrong is back from suspension.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Washington Commanders. Washington is 0-1 straight up but 1-0 against the spread, covering a 5.5-point road number in a two-point loss. One road game, no home sample. The Commanders are rated Medium on schedule strength (13th) - Philadelphia is thirteenth in FPI. Twenty-two points on the road at Philadelphia is a respectable baseline and the defense held the Eagles to 24. Washington has lost two straight in this series.
Dallas Cowboys. Dallas is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover a three-point road number in an eight-point loss. One road game, no home sample. The Cowboys are rated Medium on schedule strength (16th). Twenty points scored and 28 allowed, against a Giants team that was widely expected to be worse than they were, is the least encouraging Week 1 profile of any team favored this week.
Head to head. Dallas leads the all-time series by roughly thirty games; the exact figure is disputed between sources (Pro-Football-Reference has 78-48-2 overall, another source has 81-49-2) and is reported here as unresolved. Washington is 2-0 in playoff meetings, in the 1972 and 1982 NFC Championship Games. Dallas has won two straight, sweeping 2025 - 44-22 in Dallas in October and 30-23 in Washington on Christmas Day.

FPI has Dallas ninth at +1.9 and Washington nineteenth at -0.7 - a 2.6-point gap that becomes about 4.6 with home field, which is where the line opened and a half-point above where it sits. DVOA sees them as near-equals and both below average: Dallas nineteenth at -15.7%, Washington twentieth at -16.7%. That agreement between systems on Washington, and the divergence on Dallas, is worth weighting: the Cowboys' FPI is built on preseason expectation and their one actual game was a loss to a team FPI rates sixteenth.

ESPN FPI rating (scale -8.0 to +6.0, Sept 16)

Key positional matchups
- Washington's passing game against a Dallas secondary without Malik Hooker. The Cowboys were beaten for 28 points by the Giants with Hooker healthy for part of that game.
- Dallas' interior offensive line, already down Tyler Smith and Matt Hennessy to injured reserve, against Daron Payne and a Washington front that is banged up but deep.
- Dorance Armstrong, back from suspension, against a Cowboys tackle group that has had a difficult start. Washington's pass rush is the unit most likely to decide whether this stays a one-score game.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Four points is close to the right number and the model lands just inside it, which makes this one of the least interesting sides and one of the more interesting totals on the slate. Dallas is marginally better and at home indoors; Washington covered in Philadelphia and gets its suspended edge rusher back. The Cowboys' injury situation is the tiebreaker and it argues against laying the points: two defensive starters out with fresh injuries, two offensive linemen on injured reserve, against a division opponent that just played a good team close on the road. The total is where the real disagreement lives. Ninety-one percent of tickets are on the Under of 50.5, and the number has not moved a half-point in either direction - meaning the books are perfectly content to absorb all of it. Two offenses that scored 20 and 22 in Week 1, indoors on a fast surface, against two defenses each missing starters, is an Over profile. Expect 27-24 in either direction. Take Washington and the points, and if you have a view on the total, it should be the unpopular one.

Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers
Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, CA · Open-air
1 · Game Overview
The largest spread of the week, and the numbers support it. San Francisco opened the season by beating the Rams 27-7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and sits first in both FPI (+5.5) and DVOA (+70.3%) - the only team ranked first in both. Miami lost 27-13 at Las Vegas, sits 32nd in FPI at -7.5, and new head coach Jeff Hafley's debut was graded an F. Thirteen points is the gap between the best-rated and worst-rated teams in the league, plus home field, and the market has priced it almost exactly. The one caveat worth holding is the trip: San Francisco played in Australia thirteen days ago and rested four core veterans on Wednesday. Teams returning from international games have historically been vulnerable the following week, though the 49ers had a full week and a half to reset.
Conditions
73-75°F, wind 5-6 mph NNW, 3% precipitation. Mostly cloudy and mild - the cleanest conditions on the board. One source flags patchy fog, which is unlikely to be a factor at a 4:25 PM kickoff.

Impact. San Francisco's Wednesday report looks alarming and mostly is not: four of the six non-participants are veteran rest days following the trip to Australia. The genuine losses are at receiver - Stribling out at least four weeks and Pearsall out for the season - and the kicker was ill. Miami, for its part, has one of the three cleanest reports in football.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
Miami Dolphins. Miami is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover as a three-point road underdog in a fourteen-point loss. One road game, no home sample. The Dolphins are rated Easy on schedule strength (29th) - Las Vegas is 29th in FPI, which makes losing by fourteen there considerably worse. Thirteen points scored is tied for the second-lowest in the league.
San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco is 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering as a 3.5-point underdog by twenty-three and a half - the largest ATS win of Week 1. The Melbourne game counted as a Rams home game, so the 49ers have no true home sample. The 49ers are rated Hard on schedule strength (6th) - the Rams are sixth in FPI. Twenty-seven points scored and seven allowed is the best two-way line in football through one week.
Head to head. Miami leads 9-7 overall - 9-6 in the regular season, with San Francisco winning the only playoff meeting, Super Bowl XIX. The last ten are split 5-5. Last meeting: Dec 22, 2024, Dolphins 29, 49ers 17, in Miami. Two years and a great deal of roster change ago.

When FPI and DVOA agree on a ranking at this magnitude, the small sample stops being an excuse. The scoring comparison is equally stark: San Francisco allowed seven points, Miami scored thirteen. The only genuine argument for Miami is that thirteen and a half points is a large number to lay in September and that San Francisco's receiving corps is thin.

Key positional matchups
- San Francisco's defensive front, rested, against a Miami offense that scored thirteen points against Las Vegas. If Nick Bosa's Wednesday rest was genuinely just rest, this is a mismatch at the point of attack.
- San Francisco's receiving depth with Stribling out at least four weeks and Pearsall out for the season. The 49ers may have to win this on the ground and through George Kittle, who was limited with an Achilles issue.
- The international-travel hangover. Thirteen days is enough to recover, but the four veteran rest days suggest San Francisco is still managing the trip. Watch the first quarter for signs it matters.
6 · Analyst Commentary
This is the clearest talent mismatch on the slate and the price reflects it, which leaves the interesting question as whether San Francisco wants a three-score win. The 49ers are missing two receivers, rested four core veterans on Wednesday, are coming off a trip to Australia, and have a 45-point total that the market has already marked down a point and a half with 87% of the money on the Under. A team that is content to lead 24-10 and run the football does not cover thirteen and a half. On the other hand, Miami has scored thirteen points in a game against the 29th-rated team in the league and now visits the best team in the league, and there is no obvious mechanism by which the Dolphins produce three touchdowns. The model lands at 27-13, half a point past the number, which is close enough to a coin flip on the cover to make this a moneyline-or-nothing game. Fifteen percent is the right chance for Miami to win outright and no more - and it is worth noting that Week 1 produced four outright underdog wins, so 15% is not zero.

1 · Game Overview
Sunday night at Arrowhead, and Kansas City arrives having beaten Denver 31-10 on Monday night to open the season, covering a 2.5-point number by eighteen and a half. Indianapolis lost 41-23 at home to Baltimore, surrendering 506 total yards of offense to Lamar Jackson. The line has not moved a half-point off 6.5 at any book all week, one of only three unanimous spreads on the board, while 80% of the money has come in on the Chiefs - a combination that usually means the books opened at the right number and are happy to take the action. FPI has Kansas City fourth and Indianapolis 23rd; DVOA has the Chiefs fifth and the Colts 30th. There is no real disagreement about who is better here, only about by how much, in a prime-time environment that historically inflates the Chiefs' home edge.

Impact. Kansas City is close to fully healthy where it counts: Mahomes, Rice and Sneed all practiced in full and Xavier Worthy has come off the report altogether. The one real concern is left tackle Josh Simmons not practicing. Indianapolis' most-discussed absence, Anthony Richardson, is the backup - Daniel Jones is the starter, so this is a depth issue rather than a starter issue.

Indianapolis Colts. Indianapolis is 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover a three-point home number by twenty-one. One home game, no road sample. The Colts are rated Hard on schedule strength (2nd toughest) - Baltimore is third in FPI - which is the best available defence of the opener. Twenty-three points scored is not the problem; 41 allowed is.

Key positional matchups
- Patrick Mahomes, fully healthy and with Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy both available, against a Colts secondary that allowed 506 total yards to Baltimore. This is the matchup that produces a blowout if it produces anything.
- Josh Simmons' back against the Colts' edge rush. Kansas City's left tackle did not practice Wednesday, and it is the one place the Chiefs are genuinely exposed.
- Daniel Jones against a prime-time Arrowhead crowd. Indianapolis needs to keep this a two-score game into the fourth quarter, which requires sustained drives against a defense that just allowed ten points.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Both rating systems make Kansas City close to nine points better than this, and the market has not moved off six and a half despite 80% of the money arriving on the Chiefs. That is either a market that is confident in its number or one that is about to be run over. The case for Indianapolis is thin but not nonexistent: the Colts led this series 18-11 historically, took two of three meetings before last November's overtime loss, and their Week 1 blowout came against the third-rated team in football. The case for Kansas City is that they are healthy at every position that matters, at home, at night, against a team whose defense just gave up 506 yards. Expect Kansas City to control this from the second quarter on. The total dropping two points to 46.5 is the market's nod to a Chiefs team that tends to win these comfortably rather than explosively, but with Mahomes, Rice and Worthy all available, 48 points feels closer than 44. Lay the points.
Game 16 of 16 · Monday, Sept 21, 2026 · 8:15 PM ET · ESPN and ABC (simulcast)
New York Giants at Los Angeles Rams
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA · Fixed translucent canopy, open sides
1 · Game Overview
John Harbaugh left Baltimore for New York and beat Dallas 28-20 in his first game, with 23-year-old Jaxson Dart going 23-for-29 for 230 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions - the youngest quarterback with a three-touchdown, no-interception line in a Week 1 prime-time game since Patrick Mahomes in 2020. Los Angeles, meanwhile, opened the season as the designated home team at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and was beaten 27-7 by San Francisco, then lost the reigning Defensive Player of the Year to knee surgery. FPI still rates the Rams sixth at +3.0 and the Giants sixteenth at -0.0, which is why Los Angeles is laying a touchdown at home on Monday night. DVOA, which knows only about Melbourne, has the Rams 29th and the Giants eleventh. As with several games this week, the two systems are describing different football teams, and the truth is somewhere in between.
Conditions
Effectively indoors - weather not a factor. Conditions outside 74°F with a 10 mph SW breeze. This is the least reliable forecast on the slate at four days out, and it does not matter.

Impact. Neither team was required to file an injury report until Thursday, so everything here comes from coach comments and beat reporting rather than an official document. This is the thinnest injury picture on the slate and should be rechecked before kickoff. The one certainty is Myles Garrett: knee surgery, injured reserve, out at least four games. Sources conflict on whether the absence is four games or the season; the conservative four-game framing is used here. The partial offset is real and frequently misread as a data error on injury reports - Aaron Donald came out of retirement on Aug 30, on a one-year deal signed after Los Angeles traded for Garrett, and is available. Losing the reigning Defensive Player of the Year still hurts; it does not leave the Rams without an interior disruptor.
4 · Recent Performance & Trends
New York Giants. The Giants are 1-0 straight up and 1-0 against the spread, covering as a three-point home underdog in an eight-point win. One home game, no road sample. The Giants are rated Hard on schedule strength (8th) - Dallas is ninth in FPI. Twenty-eight points scored and 20 allowed is a solid two-way line, and DVOA rates the Giants eleventh on the strength of it. New York has lost four straight in this series.
Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are 0-1 straight up and 0-1 against the spread, failing to cover a 3.5-point number in a twenty-point loss. The Melbourne game counted as a Rams home game, so Los Angeles has technically played at home and lost by twenty. The Rams are rated Hard on schedule strength - 1st, the toughest in the league, because San Francisco is the top-rated team in FPI. Seven points scored is the lowest figure in the league through one week.
Head to head. Los Angeles leads 30-17 overall - 29-16 in the regular season across 45 meetings, with a 1-1 playoff split - and has won four straight in the series (2017, 2020, 2021, 2023). The Giants' last win was Oct 23, 2016. Last meeting: Dec 31, 2023, Rams 26, Giants 25, at MetLife Stadium, decided when a 54-yard field goal attempt missed on the final play.

5 · Advanced Analysis
FPI: Rams sixth at +3.0, Giants sixteenth at -0.0 - a three-point gap that becomes about five with home field, two points inside the posted seven. DVOA disagrees entirely, placing the Giants eleventh at +26.6% and the Rams 29th at -49.7%, a function of a 27-7 loss in Australia. Neither system accounts for Myles Garrett's absence, which is worth something on the order of a point and a half to two points against a Giants offensive line facing a young quarterback's second start. Adjust for that and the fair number lands nearer four than seven. The Giants' Week 1 scoring line - 28 for, 20 against - is genuinely better than the Rams'.
Week 1 points scored (0-60 pts)
Week 1 points allowed (0-60 pts, lower is better)
ESPN FPI rating (scale -8.0 to +6.0, Sept 16)
FTN Total DVOA (scale -90% to +75%, one-game sample)
Key positional matchups
- Jaxson Dart's second start against a Rams pass rush without Myles Garrett but with Aaron Donald. Dart's debut was efficient and protected; the Rams' ability to make a 23-year-old uncomfortable just took its biggest hit.
- The Giants' cornerbacks - Deonte Banks and Paulson Adebo both did limited work Wednesday - against Los Angeles' receivers. If either is limited Monday, New York's secondary is the weak point in an otherwise encouraging defensive profile.
- Matthew Stafford against a Giants defense that held Dallas to twenty. The Rams scored seven points in Australia and need to demonstrate that was jet lag rather than a trend.
6 · Analyst Commentary
Seven points is two full points past where the ratings put this, and every current piece of evidence favors the road team: the Giants won and covered, the Rams lost by twenty and lost their best defensive player, and DVOA - for whatever a one-game sample is worth - rates New York eighteen places higher. The case for Los Angeles is that FPI has them sixth on a preseason-weighted prior, that the Melbourne trip is a legitimate excuse for a bad performance, that they have won four straight in this series, that Aaron Donald is on the field to absorb some of what Garrett's absence costs, and that a 23-year-old quarterback making his second start on Monday night in a hostile building is a genuinely different test from a home opener. Both cases are real. What is not real is a seven-point spread: the honest number is four or four and a half. Expect a competitive game in the low-to-mid forties combined, with the Rams winning by a field goal or a touchdown and the Giants covering comfortably either way. The Rams' chance of covering is about four in ten. This is the second-best underdog price on the board behind Jacksonville.
Run notes — gaps, deviations and conflicts
Everything this run could not establish, could not reconcile, or handled differently from the standing method. Recorded here so a pattern of missing fields is visible from week to week.
Slate verification
The full 2026 Week 2 schedule was pulled from nfl.com and independently confirmed against CBS Sports, Pro-Football-Reference, nflschedules.com and Fox Sports. Sixteen games kick off inside the window of Thursday Sept 17 through Wednesday Sept 23 — one Thursday, fourteen Sunday, one Monday. No games on Friday Sept 18, Saturday Sept 19, Tuesday Sept 22 or Wednesday Sept 23; Week 3 opens Thursday Sept 24 (Falcons at Packers), outside the window. No byes in Week 2, so all 32 teams appear. No Week 2 game was played before today, so nothing was excluded as already played. Sixteen games identified, sixteen reports written, counted twice.
Insufficient games played
Every four-game window in this report contains one game. ATS records are shown as 1-0 (1 game) or 0-1 (1 game); the full four-game window opens in Week 5. Home/away splits are similarly degenerate — each team has played exactly one game, home or away, and is noted as having no sample on the other side. Only 2026 games are used; the prior season is never reached back into to pad a window.
Schedule difficulty method — a documented deviation
The project method ranks on opponents' combined winning percentage, supported by FPI. After one game that primary input is degenerate: a team's only opponent is 1-0 if it beat you and 0-1 if you beat it, so opponent win pct is exactly 1.000 for all sixteen Week 1 losers and .000 for all sixteen winners, and carries no information beyond your own result. The ordering in the table above is therefore driven by opponent FPI, with opponent win pct shown alongside in its own column as specified. Ties in FPI were broken by the opponent's DVOA. This deviation is deliberate, is confined to Weeks 1 through 4, and reverts to the specified method once win percentages carry signal. Tiers are provisional until Week 5.

- Giants at Rams — Neither team had filed an injury report as of this run; all Giants and Rams information is from coach comments and beat reporting. This is the thinnest injury picture on the slate.
- Giants at Rams — Sources conflict on Myles Garrett's timeline (at least four games per AP and Sky Sports, out for the season per one Yahoo write-up). The conservative framing is used.
- Giants at Rams — Public consensus figures for this game are preliminary as the last game on the board.
Not yet published — worth rechecking before kickoff
Only the Thursday game carries final Out/Doubtful/Questionable designations. Everything for the Sunday and Monday games is Wednesday practice participation (DNP / Limited / Full); official game designations post Friday Sept 19. Denver did not practice Wednesday, so its participation levels are league-mandated estimates rather than observations. Neither the Giants nor the Rams had filed an injury report at the time of this run. Sunday precipitation forecasts are three days out and will move; where the kickoff-hour probability and the daily total disagreed materially, both are shown rather than one being chosen. Retractable-roof closures at Atlanta, Houston, Arizona and Dallas are inferred from the forecast, not announced.
Recurring data caution — the Over/Under consensus column
The public-consensus totals used in this report show the Under favoured on fifteen of sixteen games, several above 85%. The same pattern appeared last week and was withheld from the Week 1 report as a probable column error at the source. It is printed this week because it is what the aggregators publish and because the report should not quietly drop a field, but it should be read with suspicion: a league-wide 85%-Under consensus inverts the documented long-run public preference for overs, and the Seahawks–Cardinals game — the one game showing an Over majority — carries the lowest total on the board, which is the wrong way round. Spread consensus from the same source is internally coherent and is treated as sound. Recommend sourcing totals consensus elsewhere from Week 3.
Source conflicts carried rather than resolved
Opening spreads disagree between CBS and RotoWire on Chicago, the Chargers and the 49ers; the CBS openers are used throughout and the conflicts are flagged in the affected games. Public money splits contradict outright between ScoresAndOdds and RotoWire on four games (Lions–Bills tickets and total, Bengals–Texans, Packers–Jets, Steelers–Patriots); these are reported as unresolved rather than picked. The Cowboys–Commanders all-time series total differs by four games between sources and is given as approximate. Myles Garrett's absence is reported as at least four games per AP and Sky Sports rather than the season-long framing one outlet used. A single-source report that Aaron Donald has come out of retirement could not be confirmed and is excluded. One aggregator's stated causes for the Seahawks–Cardinals line move were internally inconsistent and were disregarded.
Corrections applied from the prior run
Two items were changed after checking this project’s run log. Aaron Donald’s return is real — he came out of retirement on Aug 30 on a one-year deal after Los Angeles traded for Myles Garrett, verified in the Sept 10 run against therams.com, CBS and Yahoo. This run’s research surfaced it as a single-source rumour and would have excluded it; it is included. Three starting-quarterback gaps were closed from prior-week verification rather than left open: Kirk Cousins (Las Vegas), Malik Willis (Miami) and Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville).
Venue and naming corrections
Buffalo plays its first season in the new Highmark Stadium. Houston's venue reverted from NRG Stadium to Reliant Stadium for 2026; several schedule sources still print the old name, and one printed the pre-2014 name. Kansas City dropped the GEHA Field prefix, leaving Arrowhead Stadium. This is Tennessee's final season in the current open-air Nissan Stadium. Chicago remains at Soldier Field. The Monday night game is an ESPN and ABC simulcast, not ESPN alone.
Method
Predicted margin is reasoned first from matchup, health and ratings; the final score is chosen to be a plausible NFL scoreline consistent with it. Win probability is then read off that margin against a normal distribution with a standard deviation of 13.5 points (1 point = 53%, 3 = 59%, 7 = 70%, 10 = 77%, 14 = 85%, 17 = 90%, interpolated between). Cover chance runs the identical curve on the predicted margin minus the spread, so a predicted 4-point win against a 3-point spread is a 1-point edge and roughly 53% to cover, not 62%. No game is given more than 90%. The aim is calibration, not a record: games called at 70% should win about seven times in ten. Inflating confidence and hedging toward 50% wreck a Brier score in opposite directions.
Ratings: ESPN Football Power Index as of Sept 16, 2026, retrieved via a syndicated republication and single-sourced.
