NFL 2026 · Week 5 · Thursday Oct 8 – Wednesday Oct 14
| Prepared Thursday, Oct 8, 2026 Window: Thu Oct 8 – Wed Oct 14 1 Thursday · 13 Sunday (1 in London) · 1 Monday Byes: Kansas City, Carolina · 30 teams play · no games Fri, Sat, Tue or Wed All times Pacific | Games in this report 15 of 15 on the nfl.com slate |
Fifteen games kick off between tonight and Monday night, and every one has its own report. Kansas City and Carolina are on bye.
As many as five teams will start someone other than the quarterback who took their first snap of the season: Tampa Bay (undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels), Chicago (Tyson Bagent), the Giants (Jameis Winston), Atlanta (Michael Penix Jr., 2-0 since his return) and, probably, Baltimore (Tyler Huntley). Two of the five winless teams, Houston and Tennessee, play each other; the other three — Tampa Bay, Miami and the Chargers — are underdogs again.
This week’s signature: the Margin Meter. Every game carries one bar that shows the forecast margin against the market’s line. The coloured bar is how far, and toward whom, this report expects the game to go; the black tick is where the betting line sits. When they sit together, the forecast agrees with the market. When they split, the gap is the disagreement, and the report says why.
The three must-watch games
Sunday, Oct 11 · 1:25 PM PT · FOX
49ers at Seahawks
The 4-0 49ers and the best offense in football go to Seattle for first place, nine months after the Seahawks beat them 41-6 in the playoffs and celebrated in their locker room. Kyle Shanahan brought that up himself.
Monday, Oct 12 · 5:15 PM PT · ESPN/ABC
Bills at Rams
Josh Allen against Matthew Stafford, the last two MVPs, with the highest total on the board and Aaron Donald, 35 and out of retirement, trying to play through a sore back. The last meeting ended 44-42.
Sunday, Oct 11 · 10:00 AM PT · FOX
Bears at Packers
Chicago has won the last two meetings, including a wild-card comeback from 18 down, and is favored at Lambeau for the first time since 2006 — with its third-string quarterback. Ben Johnson has made no secret that he enjoys this.
Two more worth your time: Raiders at Patriots, where Kirk Cousins’s 3-1 Raiders meet a New England team down to its fourth and fifth corners, and Ravens at Falcons on Sunday night, where the line moved nine points on Lamar Jackson’s ankle and Bijan Robinson is running like the best back in football.

Schedule difficulty — schedule already played
Each team is rated on the strength of the opponents it has already faced, not the ones still to come. The primary input is opponents’ SRS (average scoring margin adjusted for schedule, computed from all 64 results so far); opponents’ points for and against per game show the scoring profile behind it, and opponents’ combined record is kept as a check. With four games played, recent form and full-season form are the same thing. Teams are split into even thirds by rank: the toughest 11 are hard, the next 10 medium, the last 11 easy.

Tiers are relative, not absolute: a “hard” schedule in a flat year is easier than a “hard” schedule in a top-heavy one. Provisional: every team has played four games, so a single blowout still moves a rating a long way. Kansas City and Carolina are on bye this week and appear for completeness.
Where the components disagree. Miami’s opponents are 15-1, the hardest slate by record, but Denver’s rate slightly tougher by SRS because Kansas City, Jacksonville, the Rams and San Francisco have won by bigger margins. At the other end, Seattle and Buffalo have both faced opponents with a combined 4-12 record — their 3-1 starts are the least tested in the league. Two records outrun their scoring: Cleveland is 3-1 having been outscored 95-81, and the Giants are 3-1 at +3. Both are winning close games they may not keep winning.
How to read the numbers
Each forecast is a predicted score built from efficiency (EPA per play and success rate, both directions), scoring pace, personnel, venue, weather and rest, with the betting line weighed as an input. The win probability and the cover chance are both read off the predicted margin, assuming final margins scatter around a forecast with a standard deviation of about 13.5 points; nothing is stated above 90%. Odds are from ScoresAndOdds, taken in one pass at 4:12 AM PT Thursday.
Game 1 of 15 · Thursday, Oct 8 · 5:15 PM PT
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys
TB under center
Jalon Daniels
Not the Week 1 starter
Undrafted rookie from Kansas, second NFL start. Baker Mayfield (dislocated right thumb, Week 3) is out.
DAL under center
Dak Prescott
Week 1 starter
1,065 yards, 8 TD, 105.0 rating. His 85 regular-season wins tie Roger Staubach for second in team history.
1 · The Setup
| Kickoff | Thursday, Oct 8, 2026 · 5:15 PM PT |
| Venue | AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX · Retractable roof |
| Broadcast | Prime Video |
| In the booth | Al Michaels (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst), Kaylee Hartung (sideline) |
| Weather | Roof decision not announced. Outside at kickoff: about 82°F and clear, east wind near 5 mph (NWS) — irrelevant if the roof is closed. |
An undrafted rookie on his first road start, against the defense that has made every quarterback it faced look like a Pro Bowler.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Tampa Bay is 0-4 for the first time since 2013 and has lost 11 of its last 13. The four losses came by 6, 4, 7 and 3 points, which is the cruel part: this is not a team being blown out, it is a team that cannot close. Only the 1992 Chargers have reached the playoffs after an 0-4 start, so a fifth loss on national television would end most of the conversation about this season before Halloween.
Dallas is 2-2 and a game behind the 3-1 Giants in the NFC East. This is the Cowboys’ third game in eleven days — a walk-off loss to Baltimore in Rio, a comeback win in Houston on Sunday, now a Thursday — and Brian Schottenheimer admitted to being “a little sleep-deprived.” Tampa Bay is on the same short week, but it did not fly to Brazil to start the stretch.
3 · The Storylines
Jalon Daniels gets the hardest easy assignment in football. The undrafted rookie went 19 of 27 for 148 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions against Green Bay, and ran for 55 more. He was pressured on 42.9% of his dropbacks. Dallas allows the highest scramble rate in the league, which suits a quarterback whose best play is leaving the pocket, but the Cowboys will be playing for the first time with a Bucs quarterback they have film on.
A defense that has not intercepted a pass. First-year coordinator Christian Parker’s unit allows a 60.6% success rate on dropbacks, second-worst through four weeks of any defense since 2016 according to Next Gen Stats. Opponents complete 8% over expected and Dallas is the only defense in the league without an interception. Daniels threw two picks last week; this is the first defense he has faced that may not catch them.
CeeDee Lamb is on a historic pace. He leads the NFL in catches (37) and receiving yards (498), and caught 17 passes for 189 yards in Houston on Sunday. George Pickens, playing on the franchise tag, is the second problem.
Todd Bowles, back where he learned the job. Bowles coached the Cowboys’ defensive backs from 2005 to 2007. He is now 0-4, with a defense that has held up (sixth in EPA allowed) and an offense that has not.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
The Bucs are without the two players who would most change this game: Mayfield, and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (fractured rib, two to four weeks), the one defender who could make a guessing quarterback pay. Rookie edge Rueben Bain Jr. is back after missing Week 4, which matters against a Dallas line that may finally get All-Pro guard Tyler Smith back from injured reserve. Dallas loses its best cover linebacker, DeMarvion Overshown, and corner Cobie Durant.

| T Drew Shelton | hamstring | OUT |
| G Tyler Smith | thumb (IR, window open) | Questionable — full Wednesday; has not played this season |
| WR Jonathan Mingo | illness | Questionable |
Final game designations from Wednesday’s official report (Thursday game). Smith would need to be activated from injured reserve.
5 · How These Teams Match Up
This is the clearest strength-on-weakness game of the week in both directions. Dallas has the most productive offense in the league by points per drive (3.39) and the worst defense by EPA allowed. Tampa Bay has the sixth-best defense and the 31st offense. Something has to give twice.
The Tampa defense has kept games close, but it has not faced a passing game like this: Dallas gains +0.28 EPA per dropback, and the Bucs will be without Winfield behind their corners. The Cowboys’ offensive line, meanwhile, gets Bain coming back off the edge. Dallas’s schedule rates easy (30th); Tampa Bay’s medium.

Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
Every Tampa Bay loss was by one score. Dallas games have averaged 58.5 combined points.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Daniels outside the pocket against Dallas’s rush lanes. Dallas rushes hard and loses contain, which is why scramble yards pile up against it. Watch the first third-and-long: if Daniels escapes to his right and finds a receiver or his checkdown, the Bucs can keep this within reach. If Dallas mugs the edges and forces him to throw from the pocket, where he was 4 of 8 for 34 yards and an interception under pressure last week, it ends early.
Cowboys 28, Buccaneers 20
Dallas scores on most of its drives and Tampa Bay cannot score on most of its own. The Bucs’ defense keeps this from becoming a rout for a half, Daniels makes a few plays with his legs, and Lamb decides it in the third quarter.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Tampa Bay Buccaneers · +8.5
Tampa Bay’s defense is good and Dallas’s is the worst in the league; the Bucs’ path is to keep the score in the teens and let Daniels’ legs exploit the one thing Dallas does worst, contain. A Dallas team on its third game in eleven days, with no interceptions all season, will give a rookie room to survive his mistakes. Two long scrambles and a short field off a Lamb fumble and this is a one-score game in the fourth.

| Broadcast | NFL Network |

Philadelphia lost its right tackle to retirement and its center to a trade on the same Tuesday. Then it got on a plane.
2 · Why This Game Matters
The Eagles are 2-2, tied for second in the NFC East, and the week took apart their offensive line. Lane Johnson retired on Tuesday in his 14th season. Cam Jurgens was traded to Baltimore the same day. Philadelphia is 18-30 without Johnson since 2013 and 122-63-1 with him, and now it starts a third-round rookie, Markel Bell, at right tackle in a stadium 3,500 miles from home.
Jacksonville is 3-1 for the second straight year — a first in franchise history — and leads the AFC South by a game. Liam Coen is 16-5 as head coach. The Jaguars stay in London for Houston at Wembley next week, so this is the first half of a two-week residency.
3 · The Storylines
The Eagles’ offense has no identity, and now no right side. First-year coordinator Sean Mannion’s unit is 29th in EPA per play. The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane writes that it lacks an identity; the halftime adjustments have drawn open criticism. Hurts was visibly emotional last week, shouting at Elijah Moore on the sideline.
Two McVay students on one field. Coen and Mannion both came up under Sean McVay. PhillyVoice put it bluntly: last year’s Jaguars are who this year’s Eagles hope to be — a slow start under a new coordinator that became a winning offense.
Howie Roseman says he is not selling. Trading a starting center in October says otherwise to some, but Roseman insists the Jurgens deal was about the return, not the season.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Philadelphia’s injury list reads like a depth chart. Saquon Barkley (hamstring) is expected to miss the game, DeVonta Smith (hamstring) is expected to miss multiple games, and Marquise Brown (ankle) did not practice. Dallas Goedert was limited with the MCL sprain that has cost him two games. On the line: no Johnson, no Jurgens, Landon Dickerson on injured reserve, and new starting center Drew Kendall did not practice. Pass rusher Jonathan Greenard sat too. Jacksonville’s concerns are in the secondary — safety Eric Murray is in the concussion protocol and safety Caleb Ransaw is on injured reserve, so rookie Jalen Huskey is expected to debut.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Jacksonville is better on both sides of the ball, and by a lot. The Jaguars are fourth in offensive EPA per play and seventh on defense, with an SRS of +15.6 — the best adjusted margin in the league — against a hard schedule. Philadelphia is 29th on offense and 27th on defense against an easy one.
Philadelphia’s path to points was always going to be the run game and Barkley, and Barkley is not expected to play. The Eagles have scored 1.79 points per drive; Jacksonville allows 13.3 points a game.

Jacksonville’s only loss came at Denver by seven. Philadelphia’s two wins came by a combined six points over Washington and Tennessee.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Markel Bell against Josh Hines-Allen. A rookie right tackle making his first start, beside a center playing out of position, against a pass rusher the Jaguars expect to play through a groin issue. Watch the first two third downs. If Hurts has time, Philadelphia’s receivers left standing can win some throws against a patched Jacksonville secondary. If he does not, the Eagles have no running back and no quick-game answer to fall back on.
Jaguars 27, Eagles 17
Jacksonville is the better team at full strength, and Philadelphia is nowhere near full strength. The Jaguars score early, sit on a two-score lead, and Lawrence has a quiet, efficient afternoon in a stadium he knows.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Philadelphia Eagles · +7
Jacksonville’s secondary is the one place it is thin: Murray in protocol, Ransaw on injured reserve, a rookie safety debuting, three corners limited. Philadelphia’s best remaining option is Hurts throwing to Elijah Moore and a limited Dallas Goedert against that patched coverage, and the Jaguars’ two weeks in London start with travel, a new safety and a team that just traded its veterans away and may play loose. A defensive score and two completions over a rookie safety and the Eagles can steal one.

| In the booth | Kenny Albert (play-by-play), Greg Olsen (analyst), Pam Oliver (sideline) |
| Weather | About 73°F and sunny, south-southwest wind near 8 mph with gusts to 16, no rain (NWS). A summer day in Green Bay in October. |
Chicago is favored at Lambeau for the first time since 2006, with its third-string quarterback.
2 · Why This Game Matters
The oldest rivalry in the league has turned in Chicago’s favor. The Bears won the last two meetings — 22-16 in overtime in December and 31-27 in January’s wild-card game after trailing by 18 at halftime — after losing 14 of 17 before that. A third straight win would be their first since 2006. They lead Green Bay by a game in an NFC North that 4-0 Minnesota is threatening to run away with.
Green Bay is 2-2 and has been outscored by 32 points. Its two wins came by three points each, over the Jets in overtime and over winless Tampa Bay. Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst both signed extensions this offseason; a third straight loss to Chicago would be noticed.

Ben Johnson has made this personal. The Bears’ second-year coach has said more than once that he wants to beat Green Bay every time. LaFleur’s answer this week: “This game is about players… I love the rivalry.”
The third-string quarterback. Williams strained his hamstring in Week 2, Bagent was concussed the same day, and 38-year-old Case Keenum won a Monday night game over the Eagles. Bagent is back and Johnson has named him: “Tyson will be the guy.” His career line across five starts is 1,044 yards, three touchdowns, six interceptions.
Love, with no time. Love’s 2.5-second average time to throw is the quickest of any starter, which is a choice forced by a line that has given up the ninth-highest pressure rate. Micah Parsons, coming back from a torn ACL, will not practice this week and has no timetable.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Chicago’s practice report was alarming on Wednesday: guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson and right tackle Darnell Wright did not practice, and neither did running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. The Sun-Times traced the line absences to an 89-snap game against the Jets rather than new injuries, and Johnson says Monangai’s thumb is not a concern. Treat them as likely to play until Friday says otherwise. Green Bay’s worry is the interior of its own line: guard Aaron Banks and both backup centers, Jager Burton and Jacob Monk, did not practice.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
The numbers lean hard toward Chicago. The Bears are ninth on offense and fifth on defense by EPA per play and have an SRS of +12.3; Green Bay is 26th and 22nd at −8.7. Chicago leads the league in rushing (785 yards, 4.9 per carry) and time of possession (36:35), and Green Bay has allowed the fifth-most rushing yards. The Packers’ run game is the worst in the league by EPA (−0.37 per carry).
The catch is the quarterback. Most of Chicago’s efficiency was built with Williams and Keenum, and Bagent’s career numbers are below average. The Bears’ formula does not need much from him: run it 35 times, take the profitable throws, punt rarely.

Chicago did not punt against the Jets and ran 89 plays to New York’s 32.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Chicago’s run game against Green Bay’s front on first down. If the Bears get four or five yards on first down, Bagent lives in second-and-short and the game looks like last week’s. If Green Bay’s front wins early and forces Bagent into third-and-seven, Chicago is asking a career backup to beat a Lambeau crowd with his arm. Count the Bears’ third-and-long attempts in the first half.
Bears 24, Packers 21
Chicago is the better team, and it can win without asking much of its quarterback. Green Bay has not shown it can run the ball or protect Love, and the Bears will control the clock. The margin is thin because Bagent is Bagent and Lambeau is Lambeau.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Green Bay Packers · +1.5
Green Bay’s best route is Bagent’s turnover rate — six interceptions in five career starts. If the Packers’ front holds the run on first down, Bagent throws on third-and-long, and a short field or two turns a low-scoring rivalry game Green Bay’s way. Love’s quick release is also the right answer to Chicago’s pressure if the Bears’ overworked line plays tired.

Joe Burrow may be throwing to Dohnte Meyers and Mitch Tinsley in 89-degree heat.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Cincinnati is 2-2 and last in an AFC North where Baltimore and Cleveland are 3-1, with a bye next week and Baltimore after that. Losing twice in a row with Burrow healthy has the Bengals saying the right things — “We’re not here for moral victories,” Burrow said — and this is the game that should stop the slide.
Miami is 0-4, the only winless team in the AFC East, and has played the hardest schedule in the league: its four opponents are a combined 15-1. First-year coach Jeff Hafley says the measure this year is growth, not wins, which is what a coach says after the franchise cut Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill and traded Jaylen Waddle.
3 · The Storylines
Burrow without his receivers. Ja’Marr Chase is in the concussion protocol and Tee Higgins did not practice with a groin and neck issue. Zac Taylor will not rule either out. If both sit, Burrow’s targets are Dohnte Meyers — who leads all receivers in Next Gen Stats’ make-miss measure and whom Taylor calls “as close to Ja’Marr as we’ve probably had” — and Mitch Tinsley.
The rebuilt Bengals front. Cincinnati traded the No. 10 pick for Dexter Lawrence and signed Jonathan Allen. Hafley called it one of the better interior lines he has seen. Miami’s offense is 30th in EPA per play.
Miami’s young defenders. Rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez made 18 tackles at Minnesota, a Dolphins rookie record, and Chop Robinson had 10 pressures. The defense held the 4-0 Vikings to 15 points without a touchdown.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Whether Chase and Higgins play decides most of what Cincinnati can do; check Friday’s designations before trusting any number here. Starting safety Bryan Cook (ankle) and Kyle Dugger (quad, “less likely”) also sat. Miami is without De’Von Achane (torn ACL, injured reserve), its one explosive weapon, and rookie receiver Caleb Douglas (ankle) is day to day.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Cincinnati is the better team on both sides (10th on offense and 10th on defense by EPA per play, SRS +3.9). Miami’s offense has produced 1.24 points per drive, the lowest in the league, and its pass defense allows +0.31 EPA per dropback, the third-worst. Burrow, even with a depleted receiver room, is throwing against the weakest part of this Miami team.
Miami’s defense is better against the run (−0.12 EPA per carry allowed) than the pass, which pushes Cincinnati toward exactly the plan it prefers. The Bengals’ problem has been protection: five sacks allowed in Houston, and a 428-yard game last week that still lost.

6 · The Thing To Watch
Who catches the ball for Cincinnati. If Chase plays, this is a mismatch. If he and Higgins both sit, watch how often Burrow targets Meyers on third down and whether Miami’s corners, also banged up, can sit on short routes. A Bengals team with two receivers can still win; it cannot win comfortably.
Bengals 24, Dolphins 17
Cincinnati wins by doing what it always does — Burrow throwing 40 times — against a pass defense that cannot cover. Miami scores more than usual because the Bengals’ secondary is short two safeties, but not enough.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Miami Dolphins · +6.5
Miami’s defense held Minnesota without a touchdown and is best against exactly what Cincinnati has left if Chase and Higgins sit: a short passing game to secondary receivers. The heat is a Miami home edge in October. If Rodriguez and Robinson keep Burrow uncomfortable and the Bengals’ injured safeties give Willis one or two broken-play completions, a 17-14 game in the fourth quarter is very possible.

Kirk Cousins, keeping the seat warm for the No. 1 pick, has the Raiders scoring 26 every week. New England has four healthy corners.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Las Vegas went 3-14 last year and is 3-1 under first-year coach Klint Kubiak, with roughly 25 new players. The Raiders have scored 26 or more in every game, a start matched only once in franchise history (2002), and they are unbeaten on the road. They sit a game behind 4-0 Kansas City in the AFC West.
New England is 2-2, a game behind Buffalo, after winning in Orchard Park last week. Ben Volin wrote in the Globe that the win kept the Patriots from falling three games back. Mike Vrabel called his concern level about Maye “very high” after the Jacksonville benching; one week later Maye threw three touchdowns against the Bills.
3 · The Storylines
Cousins, 38, playing for himself and for Mendoza. He told Mark Schlereth his job is to “show him what an NFL offense is supposed to look like.” He threw for 365 yards in the loss to Kansas City and has climbed to eighth in NFL.com’s quarterback rankings.
Josh McDaniels against the team that fired him. New England’s coordinator coached the Raiders in 2023 and 2024. Linebacker Robert Spillane, who set a Raiders tackles record in 2024, now plays for the Patriots.
Maxx Crosby against a recovering quarterback. Crosby has 25 pressures. Maye flubbed three snaps and lost a fumble even in the Buffalo win.
A rookie with three interceptions. Fifth-round Raiders corner Hezekiah Masses has three picks. Las Vegas leads the league with nine takeaways.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
New England’s corner room is in crisis. Christian Gonzalez (shoulder) and Carlton Davis (neck) did not practice, and only Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, Kindle Vildor and Al’Zillion Hamilton did position drills on Wednesday. Against a team with Brock Bowers, Tre Tucker and Cousins throwing on time, that is the game. Las Vegas is fairly healthy: receiver Jalen Nailor (concussion) is likely out and Jack Bech has a fractured forearm, but Bowers and guard Jackson Powers-Johnson were limited and trending toward playing.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Las Vegas is fourth in defensive EPA per play; New England is 23rd on offense. The Raiders’ offense is middling by EPA (14th) but has turned drives into points (2.40 per drive). The Patriots’ defense has been solid (13th) — with Gonzalez on the field.
The Raiders cannot run: 3.2 yards per carry, 31st, and backs average 0.38 yards before contact. The Patriots are even worse at 0.20. Neither team will win this on the ground. Las Vegas allows touchdowns on 76.9% of red-zone trips, which is the soft spot Maye has to hit. The schedules point the other way from the records: New England has faced the third-hardest slate, Las Vegas the tenth-easiest.

6 · The Thing To Watch
Bowers and Tucker against New England’s fourth and fifth corners. The Patriots’ answer will be to play zone and rush four. Cousins is excellent at reading zone and gets the ball out quickly, which is why his sack rate is so low. Watch the first Raiders third down: if Bowers is uncovered over the middle, Vrabel has to choose between blitzing a quarterback who punishes it and sitting back and dying slowly.
Raiders 24, Patriots 21
The Raiders win in Foxborough. New England’s secondary cannot cover what Las Vegas puts on the field, Cousins will not give the ball away, and Maye has not yet shown he can win a game without a turnover of his own.

Las Vegas is the betting underdog and this report’s pick to win. Maye only has to be ordinary for this to be a Raiders afternoon.

The best defense in football against a quarterback with a hurt hand, on the day Drew Brees calls the game and goes into the Ring of Honor at halftime.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Minnesota is 4-0, leads the NFC North by a game over Chicago, and has a bye next week. A 5-0 start would put the Vikings level with San Francisco for the best record in the conference going into the break, and they have done it without a functioning offense: 21.5 points a game, last in the league in passing yards.
New Orleans is 1-3 and was embarrassed 45-24 at home by Atlanta on Monday night — Shough’s word was “embarrassing.” Kellen Moore’s team has trailed by double digits early in three of four games, and it is playing on six days’ rest after a Monday game. Brees’s halftime induction will fill the building; whether the team gives it anything to cheer is another matter.
3 · The Storylines
Brian Flores against a quarterback who has been sacked 12 times. Minnesota leads the league with 16 sacks and allows 12.8 points a game. Dallas Turner has 5.5 sacks. Atlanta pressured Shough on nearly half his dropbacks on Monday while rarely blitzing; Flores blitzes constantly.
Kevin O’Connell’s strange 4-0. The Vikings beat Miami 15-10 without scoring a touchdown: five Will Reichard field goals and 13 catches on 13 targets for T.J. Hockenson. Minnesota signed Odell Beckham Jr. to the practice squad this week, which says what O’Connell thinks of his receiver depth with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison hurt.
Brees in the booth and in the rafters. He calls the first half for FOX and is inducted at halftime. Shough threw a career-high four touchdowns against Las Vegas two weeks ago; he has the arm to give Brees something to talk about if he gets time.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Minnesota’s offense is the problem and it is short again. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw (concussion) is expected back only after the bye, left guard Donovan Jackson is likely out for the season, and the receivers are uncertain: Jefferson (ankle) was limited after missing Week 4, Addison (hamstring) did not practice, and O’Connell said he has no projection on Jefferson. New Orleans is thin in the backfield: Alvin Kamara (back) did not practice and Travis Etienne is on injured reserve. Linebacker Kaden Elliss (calf) and edge Anfernee Jennings (knee) also sat.

Wednesday’s Saints report was an estimate from a walkthrough; one team site listed Shough as a full participant.
5 · How These Teams Match Up
This is the most lopsided unit matchup on the slate. Minnesota’s defense is first in EPA per play allowed (−0.18) and first in success rate allowed (32.9%). New Orleans’s defense is 30th (+0.15) and allows a 51.8% success rate, among the worst. The other side flips it: Minnesota’s offense has the league’s lowest success rate (33.3%), and New Orleans’s is roughly average.
Minnesota’s SRS is +7.7 against a medium schedule; New Orleans is −5.4. The market has the Vikings by only a point and a half on the road, which is a bet that Minnesota’s offense cannot take advantage of a bad defense.

Scoring profile (points per game; bar scale 0–40)
Efficiency (success rate, %; bar scale 0–60)
Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
Minnesota’s four wins came by 17, 6, 7 and 5. New Orleans has allowed 32 points a game.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Shough’s first read against Flores’s five-man pressure. Minnesota sends extra rushers more than anyone and dares quarterbacks to find the open man fast. New Orleans has thrown well when Shough has time (fourth in passing yards), but the Saints cannot run with Kamara hurt, so they will be throwing into the blitz on early downs. If Shough beats the first two pressures for big plays, this is a game. If he takes sacks, it is over by halftime.
Vikings 23, Saints 17
The Vikings’ defense wins the game, the way it has won the other four. Minnesota will not score much, but New Orleans’s defense allows enough for Reichard to do the rest, and the Saints’ line will not hold up against the pressure.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
New Orleans Saints · +1.5
Minnesota’s offense is the worst in football by success rate and may be without Jefferson, Addison and its left tackle. If New Orleans gets two quick completions against the blitz and an early lead, the Vikings have to drive the field to answer, which they have not shown they can do. A dome, a full house for Brees, and a Minnesota team looking toward its bye is the setting for a low-scoring upset.

Cleveland is 3-1 and has been outscored. The Jets ran 32 plays last week.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Cleveland leads the AFC North with Baltimore at 3-1 and has won three straight, the last on Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with ten seconds left against Pittsburgh. It is the Browns’ first time over .500 since 2023. Todd Monken, in his first year as a head coach, has answered every doubt so far, and he has been loud about it after Mike Tomlin’s preseason line that “the Browns is the Browns.”
The Jets are 1-3 with three straight losses and the longest active playoff drought in the four major North American leagues. The New York Post’s Brian Costello called the 23-12 loss in Chicago one of the worst games in franchise history: outgained 492 to 157, 89 plays to 32. Costello frames Cleveland, New England, Miami and Las Vegas as the stretch that decides Aaron Glenn’s second season.
3 · The Storylines
Aaron Glenn, needing a week like this. Glenn spent his week looking for positives in the Chicago film. A loss at home to a team the Jets beat 27-20 last November, with Glenn’s seat warming, would be hard to explain.
Watson’s second act. Watson started the year with a 34-10 loss in Jacksonville and has won three in a row since, playing his first home games in nearly two years. He also fumbled twice against Pittsburgh. The Browns say they will not trade Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel, whose return from injured reserve forces a roster decision.
The Browns after Myles Garrett. Cleveland traded Garrett to the Rams in June for Jared Verse and picks and still has 12 sacks. But three defensive linemen — Mason Graham, Mike Hall Jr. and Derek Barnett — did not practice Wednesday.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
The Jets’ offense is shorthanded: Breece Hall (quad) is unlikely, which hands the backfield to Braelon Allen, and receiver Adonai Mitchell (finger) is doubtful. Left guard Dylan Parham (knee) also sat, and corner Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (concussion) is unlikely, so rookie D’Angelo Ponds is next up. Cleveland’s worry is the interior of its defensive line, where three starters or rotation players did not practice. Center Elgton Jenkins (concussion) was full and should return.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Cleveland’s record outruns its play. The Browns have been outscored 95-81 and their SRS is +0.1, though against the fourth-hardest schedule in the league. They are 17th in both offensive and defensive EPA per play, and their run game is among the worst (−0.17 EPA per carry). They score 1.72 points per drive.
The Jets are 12th on offense by EPA, nearly all of it through the air (+0.15 per dropback) because their run game is as bad as Cleveland’s. Their defense allows a 49.4% success rate. Strip the records away and these are two below-average teams, and Cleveland is slightly the better one.

Defense EPA and success rate: lower is better. EPA and success rate computed from nflverse play-by-play, Weeks 1–4, no garbage-time filter; league rank in brackets (1 = best). Four games is the whole season so far, so “last 4” and season figures are the same.

Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
Cleveland’s three wins came by 4, 3 and 3. The Jets’ three losses came by 3, 7 and 11.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Braelon Allen against a Browns interior missing three linemen. The Jets will want to run, keep Smith in manageable downs and avoid another 32-play afternoon. Cleveland’s depth inside is suddenly thin. If Allen is getting four yards a carry in the first quarter, the Jets control the game and the clock; if Cleveland’s backups hold, Smith is throwing into the rain in the second half.
Browns 20, Jets 17
Cleveland keeps winning games it has no business winning comfortably, and it does it again. The Browns are slightly better, the Jets are missing their best back, and Watson has the fourth quarter on his side. Expect a field goal to matter.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Cleveland Browns · +1.5
Cleveland is the betting underdog and this report’s pick to win. The case is simple: the Jets are without Hall and probably Mitchell, their defense has been gashed for a 49% success rate, and Cleveland has won three straight close games with a defense that still gets home. Watson only has to be steady; the Browns have shown they can find the last field goal.

J.J. Watt calls a game in which his brother chases the quarterback with the most turnovers in the league.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Both teams are 2-2. Pittsburgh is a game and a half behind Cleveland after losing on a 56-yard field goal last Thursday, and has had ten days to stew on it. Indianapolis has won two straight — ending the league’s longest losing streak at nine — and leads the AFC South, two games clear of winless Houston and Tennessee.
Last November Pittsburgh forced six turnovers and beat a 7-1 Colts team 27-20. With Jones still putting the ball on the ground and rain in the forecast, that is the template the Steelers will be working from.
3 · The Storylines
Michael Pittman Jr. against the team that drafted him. Pittman caught 485 passes for 5,254 yards in six seasons in Indianapolis before being traded in March; Pittsburgh then gave him a three-year, $59 million extension. He is limited with a foot problem reported as plantar fasciitis and was seen on a scooter.
Rodgers and McCarthy, together again. Rodgers is the third quarterback aged 42 or older to throw multiple touchdowns in back-to-back games, after Tom Brady and Vinny Testaverde. The Post-Gazette noted “the wrong kind” of emotion on the sideline in Cleveland.
Jones against T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Shane Steichen is backing his quarterback — “really good things and then some things we need to clean up” — but seven turnovers in four games against a Pittsburgh pass rush in the rain is the danger in one sentence. Jones was 4 of 9 for 15 yards on play-action in London.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Pittsburgh’s corners are hurt: Jalen Ramsey (broken wrist) is expected to play in a cast again, and Jamel Dean (ankle) did not practice; if Dean sits, Asante Samuel Jr. and Daylen Everette start. Running back Rico Dowdle (toe) is limited after missing two games. Indianapolis’s center, Tanor Bortolini (ankle), did not practice, which matters against Cam Heyward, and pass rusher Arden Key (hamstring) also sat. Alec Pierce is on injured reserve.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Two flawed teams with identical SRS (−1.7). Indianapolis runs well (+0.12 EPA per carry, one of the league’s best) and passes badly (−0.21 per dropback). Pittsburgh is 28th on offense and has converted 16 of 50 third downs; its defense is middle of the pack (14th). The Colts’ defense is 26th.
The rain points toward Indianapolis’s strength — Jonathan Taylor — and away from its weakness. It also raises the cost of Jones’s ball security. Pittsburgh comes in on ten days’ rest; the Colts flew home from London and have not had a bye.

Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
Pittsburgh’s four games were decided by 7, 17, 3 and 3. Two of the Colts’ were decided in the final seconds.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Taylor on a wet field against Pittsburgh’s run fits. Taylor ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns in London and owns the most international rushing yards in league history. If Indianapolis can run on first and second down, Jones never has to hold the ball in the rain against Watt. If Pittsburgh stuffs the first few carries, the Colts are asking their most turnover-prone player to win in the conditions most likely to cause turnovers.
Steelers 23, Colts 20
Pittsburgh wins a close, wet, ugly game on a takeaway and a field goal. The rest edge and the home field are worth a field goal together, and the Steelers’ pass rush is better suited to the conditions than the Colts’ quarterback.

The rain helps the team that runs better, and that is Indianapolis. Taylor against a Pittsburgh defense that has not faced a back like him, while Rodgers — sacked 13 times — tries to throw a wet ball behind a line that cannot protect him on third down. If the Colts hold onto the ball, they are the more complete team in these conditions.

Somebody has to win. One of two 0-4 teams leaves Nashville with its first victory.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Both teams are 0-4 and tied for last in the AFC South, two games behind Indianapolis. Only the 1992 Chargers made the playoffs from 0-4; the loser here is 0-5 and done in every practical sense. Houston has made three straight playoff trips under DeMeco Ryans. Tennessee is in Robert Saleh’s first season, with Brian Daboll as coordinator, and still looking for a first win.
It is also not as bad a game as the records suggest. Houston lost to Buffalo by five, to Indianapolis by two on a last-second field goal and to Dallas by four after leading by ten. Tennessee lost to Philadelphia by four, the Giants by five and Baltimore by six.
3 · The Storylines
DeMeco Ryans takes the defensive call sheet. After the Dallas collapse, Ryans took play-calling from coordinator Matt Burke: “It’s no slight against coach Burke.” Ryans built his reputation calling defenses in San Francisco.
Cam Ward, still searching. Ward had the league’s worst QBR as a rookie in 2025, and Tennessee has scored 10 or fewer in two of its four games. Saleh: “We have the utmost confidence in Cam.” Rookie receiver Carnell Tate caught 9 passes for 145 yards in Baltimore and is the bright spot.
Nico Collins is back. Collins caught 7 for 118 and two touchdowns against Dallas in his return from a hamstring injury. Tennessee’s pass defense allows +0.20 EPA per dropback, among the worst.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Houston’s best defender, Will Anderson Jr. (ankle, 4.5 sacks, 26 pressures), did not practice Wednesday and no beat report has clarified the injury. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (groin) was limited after missing Week 4. Tennessee is missing more: defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons (back) and running back Tony Pollard (foot) did not practice, nor did lineman John Franklin-Myers, and safety Amani Hooker’s concussion symptoms returned.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Houston is better on both sides by most measures (19th on offense and 21st on defense by EPA, against 25th and 24th), and its defense allows a 39.4% success rate — one of the best — even if its EPA allowed is worse because of the big plays. Tennessee’s offense has produced 1.38 points per drive, second-worst in the league.
The wind, gusting to 25, cuts against the better passing team, which is Houston. It also does Fairbairn’s long field goals no favours. Houston committed 13 penalties last week after 18 in the first three games.

6 · The Thing To Watch
Collins against Tennessee’s secondary with Simmons out. Without Simmons, Tennessee’s best way to slow Houston is gone from the inside, and the Titans’ pass defense has been poor. If Stroud can find Collins on intermediate throws in the wind, Houston builds the kind of lead Ward has not been able to chase. If the wind turns this into a field-position game, it stays close.
Texans 21, Titans 14
Houston is the better team and the healthier one if Anderson plays, and Stroud does not throw interceptions. The Texans win by a touchdown in a game the wind keeps low-scoring.

Seven and a half is a lot to lay with an 0-4 road team that has lost three one-score games and may be without its best pass rusher. Gusts to 25 suppress the passing game Houston relies on, and the Texans’ penalties extend drives. If Tate keeps winning outside and Ward finally finishes a red-zone trip with a throw, Tennessee is in a one-score game it can win late.

Jayden Daniels is back, in a brace, with no Terry McLaurin and no Stefon Diggs to throw to.
2 · Why This Game Matters
The Giants lead the NFC East at 3-1 in John Harbaugh’s first season, despite losing their rookie quarterback in Week 2. Washington is last at 1-3 and swept the Giants last season, the last meeting a 29-21 win in December.
For Washington, this is about whether the season can be restarted. Daniels missed two games, Marcus Mariota won one of them and then re-sprained his knee, and seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis finished the loss in London. Dan Quinn’s team has allowed 30.5 points a game.
3 · The Storylines
Daniels and the same elbow, again. It is the second time in under a year he has dislocated it. Last season he came back after a month, played Minnesota in a brace, went 9 of 20 with an interception in a 31-0 loss and re-aggravated it. He chose not to have surgery this time and says he will “embrace the brace.”
Winston, in first place. He signed a two-year extension in September and has won both starts, the second on Deonte Banks’s 98-yard interception return at the final whistle against Arizona. An NJ.com headline this week had Harbaugh forecasting a quarterback move; for now it is Winston’s job.
Malik Nabers’s knee. Nabers, back from a torn ACL and meniscus, caught 6 for 112 and a touchdown last week, then sat Wednesday with soreness he called “a little bit more” than usual. “We’ll see how the next day goes.”
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Both offenses are short. Washington’s top two receivers, McLaurin and Diggs, did not practice with hamstring injuries, guard Sam Cosmi is in the concussion protocol, and left tackle Laremy Tunsil has been out since tearing his triceps in camp. The Giants’ Nabers (knee) and left tackle Andrew Thomas (groin) sat, defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck) may miss a long time, and Dart and Brian Burns are out for the season.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
The Giants are 3-1 on a +3 point differential, and their SRS is −3.3 against the fifth-easiest schedule in the league. Washington’s SRS is −10.6, but most of that was built without Daniels. Neither offense has been efficient (22nd and 21st by EPA per play), and the Giants’ defense allows a 46.5% success rate.
Daniels changes the Washington side more than any number from the last three weeks can show. Without his two best receivers and in the rain, though, the most likely Washington offense is Daniels’s legs, the tight ends and a lot of Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who ran for 96 yards in the last meeting.

Washington has allowed 30 or more three times. The Giants have scored more than 12 only twice.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Whether Daniels runs. The brace is on his non-throwing arm, but the way he lands on it matters. If Washington calls designed runs early, Quinn trusts the elbow and the Giants’ defense has to account for an extra runner in the rain. If Daniels stays in the pocket throwing to Treylon Burks and the tight ends, the Giants can sit on short routes and wait for a mistake.
Commanders 23, Giants 20
Daniels is worth more than the three games without him suggest, and Washington is at home in the rain. It will not be pretty without McLaurin and Diggs, but the Commanders edge it on a late field goal.

Washington has allowed 30 points a game and will play without its two best receivers, in the rain, with a quarterback in a brace who last returned from this injury and went 9 of 20. The Giants have won close games with defense and takeaways, and Winston only has to avoid the big mistake. If Washington’s offense stalls early, the Giants can win this 17-13.
Game 11 of 15 · Sunday, Oct 11 · 1:05 PM PT
Denver Broncos at Los Angeles Chargers
DEN under center
Bo Nix
Week 1 starter
819 yards, 5 TD, 3 INT; a Denver Post column this week asked about his record in big games.
LAC under center
Justin Herbert
Week 1 starter
Six interceptions and 12 sacks — the first Chargers quarterback with that combination through four games since Ryan Leaf in 2000.
1 · The Setup
| Kickoff | Sunday, Oct 11, 2026 · 1:05 PM PT |
| Venue | SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA · Fixed translucent canopy, open sides |
| Broadcast | CBS |
| In the booth | Ian Eagle (play-by-play), Ross Tucker (analyst), Evan Washburn (sideline) |
| Weather | About 73°F, southwest wind near 15 mph, 43% chance of showers outside (NWS); the canopy covers the field, so the effect is minor. |
Jim Harbaugh is 0-4 for the first time as an NFL coach, and his offensive line may start five backups.
2 · Why This Game Matters
The Chargers are 0-4 and last in an AFC West led by 4-0 Kansas City and 3-1 Las Vegas. Harbaugh, in his third season, bristled at a question about Herbert playing “hero ball” — “That just sounds more like an insult than it does a question” — and the national conversation has moved to how long he stays. A loss here makes 0-5 with Herbert healthy.
Denver is 2-2 and has played the hardest schedule in the league to date: Kansas City, Jacksonville, the Rams and San Francisco. The Broncos won the last meeting 19-3 in January and lead the series 74-58-1.
3 · The Storylines
The Chargers’ line, or what is left of it. Rashawn Slater has a high ankle sprain and is expected to go on injured reserve, Joe Alt (neck) did not practice, center Tyler Biadasz is out for the season, and guard Kayode Awosika has a fibula injury. The group that finished in Seattle — Logan Taylor, Jake Slaughter, Jacob Spomer, Cole Strange, Travis Burke — may start.
Sean Payton without his corners. Pat Surtain II (ankle) and Riley Moss (ribs) were both hurt in San Francisco. ESPN reported both could go on injured reserve; Payton said he does not expect that. Either way, Jahdae Barron and Kris Abrams-Draine are likely to start against Herbert.
Mike McDaniel’s first offense in Los Angeles. The former Miami coach is the Chargers’ coordinator, and his unit is last in the league in EPA per play. Ladd McConkey (foot) did not practice.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
This is a game decided by who is not playing. The Chargers may be without both starting tackles, their center and their best receiver, and safety Derwin James Jr. (hamstring) and corner Donte Jackson are week to week. Khalil Mack’s absence Wednesday was rest. Denver is without its two starting corners and receiver Pat Bryant (ankle); edge Dondrea Tillman is back from a hamstring.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Los Angeles has the worst offense in the league by EPA per play (−0.16) and the lowest points per drive (1.43). Its defense, 12th, has kept it in games. Denver’s offense is 16th; its defense is 23rd by EPA but has faced the hardest set of offenses in the league, and Chargers Wire has it 10th against the pass.
Denver cannot run (81 yards a game, 29th) and the Chargers’ defense is sound, so this is likely to be a low-scoring game decided by which depleted unit breaks first: the Chargers’ line or Denver’s secondary. The Chargers have committed 38 penalties, fourth-most, including 16 for 130 yards in Seattle.

Efficiency (success rate, %; bar scale 0–60)
Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
The Chargers have not scored more than 23 in a game. Denver’s schedule is the hardest in the league by opponent SRS.
6 · The Thing To Watch
The Chargers’ backup tackles on third down. Herbert can beat Denver’s replacement corners if he has time to throw. He will not have much: a line of backups facing a healthy Denver front, with Tillman back. Watch the first two third-and-longs. If Herbert gets to the top of his drop and finds Quentin Johnston against Abrams-Draine, the Chargers have a path. If he is moving before he sets, Denver wins.
Broncos 24, Chargers 17
Denver wins. The Chargers’ offensive line is in no state to protect Herbert against a good pass rush, and the Broncos’ secondary problems will matter less if the ball never gets downfield.

Denver will start two backup corners against a quarterback with one of the best arms in football, and the Chargers’ defense, 12th by EPA, is good enough to hold a Broncos offense that cannot run. If McDaniel uses quick throws and motion to protect his line, and Herbert hits two shots over Barron and Abrams-Draine, the Chargers can win their first game 20-17.

The highest total on the board, because neither defense can stop a pass.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Detroit is 2-2, two games behind Minnesota, with a bye next week. A loss would be the Lions’ first back-to-back defeat of the season heading into a week off, and Dan Campbell’s defense, which allows 31.8 points a game, is the subject of every conversation in Detroit.
Arizona is 1-3 and has lost three straight in Mike LaFleur’s first season, the last on a 98-yard interception return at the final whistle in New York. The Cardinals are 20-52 since 2022. The fans want rookie Carson Beck; LaFleur is staying with Brissett.
3 · The Storylines
Drew Petzing against his old offense. Detroit’s coordinator ran Arizona’s offense for three years, during which Trey McBride set the single-season receptions record for a tight end. LaFleur: “He definitely has his spin on that offense, but it’s the Detroit Lions offense.”
Campbell wants a volunteer for McBride. On Detroit radio, Campbell challenged his defense: “I want somebody to come in tomorrow and say, ‘I want McBride.’” McBride is third in the league with 33 catches. Opposing quarterbacks are 11 of 16 on throws of 20-plus yards against the Lions.
A seventh-round rookie at left tackle. Paris Johnson Jr. tore his biceps and is out for the season. Jayden Williams, a seventh-round pick, starts in his place against a Detroit defense with 15 sacks, second in the league. The Giants blitzed Brissett on 51.3% of dropbacks last week and got pressure on 55%.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Arizona lost its left tackle for the season and lineman Isaiah Adams (ankle) will not play, so two of its five linemen are new. Running back Jeremiyah Love was limited with what LaFleur called ankle “maintenance.” Detroit’s secondary is short: corner Rock Ya-Sin (hamstring) did not practice, though Brian Branch has begun practising to return from his Achilles injury.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Detroit’s offense is seventh in EPA per play and scores 2.83 points per drive; its defense is 31st and allows +0.25 EPA per dropback. Arizona’s pass defense is even worse at +0.32, second-worst in the league. Arizona’s run defense, by contrast, is one of the best (−0.20 EPA per carry), which pushes Detroit toward what it already does best.
Arizona has played the tenth-hardest schedule and Detroit a medium one. The Cardinals’ offense is 20th by EPA and has been turnover-prone with Brissett.

Scoring profile (points per game; bar scale 0–40)
Efficiency (success rate, %; bar scale 0–60)
Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
Detroit’s games have averaged 61.5 combined points.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Jayden Williams against the Detroit pass rush. The rookie left tackle is the weak point in a line that already let Brissett get hit all afternoon in New York. If Detroit can rush four and win at left tackle, it can drop seven into coverage and take away McBride. If Arizona has to help Williams with a tight end, that tight end is often McBride, and the Cardinals lose their best receiver to pass protection.
Lions 30, Cardinals 24
Detroit outscores Arizona. Goff against the league’s second-worst pass defense is the best matchup on either side, and the Lions’ pass rush against a rookie tackle limits how often Brissett can answer.

The best offense in football against the defense that beat it 41-6 in January.
2 · Why This Game Matters
First place in the NFC West. San Francisco is 4-0 and can start 5-0 for the first time since 2023; Seattle, the defending champion, is 3-1. The last time these teams met, in the divisional round on January 17, Seattle won 41-6 at Levi’s Stadium and celebrated in the 49ers’ locker room. Kyle Shanahan brought it up himself this week.
The NFL moved the game into FOX’s national window. Seattle has won the last two meetings; before that, San Francisco had won four straight in Seattle.
3 · The Storylines
Purdy’s MVP case. He has not been sacked, has one interception and leads the league in the efficiency measures. San Francisco gains +0.53 EPA per dropback, a number so far above the rest of the league it will come down; the question is how far.
Mike Evans, one touchdown from Tony Gonzalez. Evans, in his first season in San Francisco after 12 in Tampa Bay, is one touchdown catch from tying Gonzalez’s 111 for ninth all-time. He was limited with a rib injury.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the league with six touchdown catches. His Wednesday absence was rest. Seattle’s coordinator Brian Fleury, who inherited Klint Kubiak’s scheme, drew praise from Shanahan this week.
Mike Macdonald’s defense against the one offense it has already solved. Seattle is second in defensive EPA per play and allows a 36.7% success rate. In January it held the 49ers to six points.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
San Francisco is without Nick Bosa (calf/knee) for a third straight game, fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee, multiple weeks) and safety Marques Sigle (high ankle sprain, at least a month); corner Upton Stout (shoulder) is uncertain. Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and linebacker Dre Greenlaw had rest days. Mykel Williams is back from his ACL tear. Seattle is close to healthy: defensive tackle Leonard Williams (ankle) was limited and Macdonald is optimistic; Zach Charbonnet remains on the PUP list.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
Strength against strength. San Francisco is first in offensive EPA by a wide margin (+0.29 per play, 3.21 points per drive). Seattle is second on defense. The other side is less settled: Seattle’s offense is 13th, and San Francisco’s defense, 18th without Bosa, is the weakest unit on the field.
The schedules matter here. Seattle has played the easiest schedule in the league (opponents 4-12), San Francisco a medium one. Seattle’s 3-1 is less proven than its record, and its SRS of +1.6 is modest for a 3-1 team. Seattle set a franchise record with 150 penalty yards last week.

San Francisco has won every game by at least six. Seattle’s wins came by 3, 24 and 7.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Purdy against Macdonald’s disguises on early downs. Seattle beat San Francisco in January by showing one coverage and playing another, making Purdy hold the ball. This year Purdy has been getting rid of it fast and has not been sacked. Watch first down: if San Francisco is completing quick throws to Kittle and Evans for five or six yards, the 49ers stay ahead of the chains. If Seattle wins first down, the January film starts to look relevant.
49ers 24, Seahawks 21
San Francisco wins a close one. The 49ers’ offense is better than anything Seattle has faced, and Seattle’s schedule has flattered its record. Without Bosa it will not be comfortable.

San Francisco is the betting underdog and this report’s pick to win. The 49ers have the best offense in the league and Seattle has not faced a passing game within a mile of it; Purdy has not been sacked, which takes away the thing Macdonald did to him in January. Seattle’s penalties and its soft schedule are the rest of the case.

Not the Week 1 starter
Back from his ACL tear in Week 3; fourth in EPA per play and success rate since.

A nine-point swing in the line, because of one ankle.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Baltimore is 3-1 and tied with Cleveland atop the AFC North, with a trip to Cleveland next week. The Ravens are 6-11 all-time without Jackson and 2-5 in the last seven games he has missed. Jackson sprained his ankle just before halftime against Tennessee and left in a boot; Ian Rapoport reports he is likely to miss this week and possibly next.
Atlanta is 2-2 and level for first in the NFC South, and since Penix returned it has looked like a different team: 35-14 at Green Bay, 45-24 at New Orleans. This is the Falcons’ third straight prime-time game and they are on six days’ rest after Monday night.
3 · The Storylines
Two first-year coaches who know each other. Jesse Minter replaced the fired John Harbaugh in Baltimore; Kevin Stefanski, who spent six years coaching against the Ravens in Cleveland, now runs Atlanta. Minter will not rule Jackson out: “When he’s ready to play, he’ll be ready to play.”
Huntley against Atlanta, again. He started and won the last meeting, 17-9 on Christmas Eve 2022, a win that clinched a playoff place. He went 8 of 9 for 63 yards in relief on Sunday.
Bijan Robinson’s fortnight. 339 rushing yards and four touchdowns in two games, 194 of them at Lambeau. He is second in the league with 614 scrimmage yards. Drake London had 194 receiving yards the same night.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
Jackson aside, Baltimore had a long list of veterans out of practice: corner Marlon Humphrey (hamstring/calf), edge Trey Hendrickson (finger), left tackle Ronnie Stanley and Calais Campbell (rest days), guard Andrew Vorhees. Zay Flowers (foot) and Kyle Hamilton (groin) were limited. Newly acquired center Cam Jurgens is in the concussion protocol and targeting Week 6, so rookie Vega Ioane starts again. Atlanta’s concern is left tackle Jake Matthews (groin), who has the league’s longest active start streak at 199; edge Za’Darius Smith (concussion) also sat, and corner A.J. Terrell is on injured reserve.

5 · How These Teams Match Up
With Jackson, Baltimore’s offense is third in EPA per play and gains +0.34 per dropback. Without him, it is a different unit, and none of those numbers carry over to Huntley. Atlanta’s defense is eighth by EPA and the best in the league against the run by EPA per carry (−0.23) — bad news for a Huntley offense that will lean on Derrick Henry.
Atlanta’s season totals are distorted by two games with Cooper Rush and a rookie at quarterback, which is why its offense rates only 18th. The Penix version has scored 80 points in two games. Baltimore’s schedule rates as the second-easiest in the league.

Atlanta’s two games with Penix: +21 and +21. Without him: −7 and −31.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Henry against Atlanta’s run defense. Baltimore without Jackson needs Henry to carry the offense, and Atlanta has been the hardest team in the league to run on. If Henry is getting stuffed on first down, Huntley is in third-and-long against a defense that does not have to respect his arm. If Henry breaks a couple, Baltimore can shorten the game and keep Robinson and Penix on the sideline.
Falcons 24, Ravens 20
Atlanta wins. With Penix, the Falcons have been one of the best teams in football for two weeks, and Baltimore without Jackson cannot keep pace if Henry is contained. If Jackson plays, the forecast flips — see the Run notes.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Baltimore Ravens · +3.5
Jackson has played on short practice weeks before, and Minter keeps saying he might. Even without him, Huntley has beaten this franchise, and Atlanta may be without its left tackle and Za’Darius Smith on six days’ rest after a Monday night game in New Orleans. If Baltimore’s pass rush gets to Penix behind a backup tackle, the Ravens can win ugly.
Game 15 of 15 · Monday, Oct 12 · 5:15 PM PT
Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams
BUF under center
Josh Allen
Week 1 starter
His late underthrow was intercepted with about a minute left in the loss to New England.
LAR under center

Week 1 starter
Reigning MVP. Rallied the Rams from ten points down in the fourth quarter in Philadelphia.

| Venue | SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA · Fixed translucent canopy, open sides |

The 2024 MVP against the reigning MVP, and Aaron Donald, at 35, back from retirement.
2 · Why This Game Matters
Buffalo is 3-1 and leads the AFC East, but New England holds the head-to-head win, and the Bills are an underdog for the first time this season. Joe Brady, in his first year as head coach after Sean McDermott was fired in January, took his first loss last week: “It obviously wasn’t good enough.”
The Rams are 2-2 against the fifth-hardest schedule in the league and are trying to win consecutive games for the first time this season. The last meeting, in December 2024, finished 44-42 with Allen accounting for six touchdowns.
3 · The Storylines
Allen against Stafford. Two MVPs in a Monday night game with a 54.5 total. Buffalo’s points per drive have fallen from 3.67 in its first two games to 2.27 in the last two, and the Rams’ defense is third in EPA per play.
Aaron Donald, again. Donald came out of retirement this season and is dealing with a back injury; Sean McVay said he is “trending” toward playing. Myles Garrett, acquired from Cleveland in June, has been on injured reserve since Sept 13.
The heaviest offenses in football. The Rams (85 plays) and Bills (66) lead the league in plays with three tight ends on the field. Expect bunched formations, play-action and a lot of blocking tight ends.
4 · Who’s Missing and Why It Matters
No official practice report has been issued for a Monday game yet. Buffalo’s list from Week 4: receiver D.J. Moore aggravated a shoulder (AC joint) injury that Adam Schefter called “not long-term,” and Ed Oliver (knee), Dee Alford (ankle) and Te’Cory Couch (hamstring) all left the New England game; corner Christian Benford (toe) missed it and was seen in a boot. Defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis is suspended. For the Rams, corner Jaylen Watson (dislocated shoulder) is expected to be ready, Donald is trending toward playing, tight end Terrance Ferguson is on injured reserve and Garrett remains out.

No official participation report yet: the first report for a Monday game follows Thursday’s practice. Statuses above are from coaches’ comments and Week 4 game reports.
5 · How These Teams Match Up
Buffalo’s offense is second in EPA per play; its defense is 29th. The Rams are the reverse in emphasis: 11th on offense, third on defense. Buffalo’s schedule has been easy (29th), the Rams’ hard (5th), which makes the Rams’ 2-2 the more impressive record.
Buffalo’s secondary may be missing two or three corners, which matters against Puka Nacua, who returned last week with 9 catches for 125 yards, and Davante Adams, who had 195 yards against the Giants.
| Through Week 4 | BUF | LAR |
|---|---|---|
| Record | 3-1 | 2-2 |

| Points per drive | 2.95 | 1.81 |
| ATS, last 4 | 3-1 | 2-2 |
| Schedule played | easy | hard |
Defense EPA and success rate: lower is better. EPA and success rate computed from nflverse play-by-play, Weeks 1–4, no garbage-time filter; league rank in brackets (1 = best). Four games is the whole season so far, so “last 4” and season figures are the same.
Scoring profile (points per game; bar scale 0–40)
Efficiency (success rate, %; bar scale 0–60)
Form (final margin by week, points; bar scale ±35, centre line = 0)
Buffalo’s games have averaged 58.5 combined points.
6 · The Thing To Watch
Nacua and Adams against Buffalo’s depleted corners. If Benford, Alford and Couch are all out or limited, the Bills will be playing backups against two of the best receivers in football. Watch how often Buffalo plays two safeties deep: if it does, Kyren Williams and the Rams’ heavy formations get to run against light boxes. If it does not, Stafford gets one-on-ones outside.
Rams 28, Bills 24
The Rams win a high-scoring Monday night game. Their defense is good enough to slow Allen for stretches, and Buffalo’s secondary cannot hold up against Nacua and Adams for four quarters.

8 · The Underdog’s Case
Buffalo Bills · +3
Josh Allen is the single most capable player in this game of winning it on his own, and the Rams’ pass rush is without Garrett and depends on a 35-year-old with a sore back. Buffalo’s offense is second in the league by EPA; if Allen extends plays against a Rams secondary that just got Watson back, the Bills can win the kind of shootout they lost 44-42 in this building in 2024.

Lessons applied: L-001, L-002, L-003, L-004, L-005, L-006, L-007, L-008; totals calibration (+1.5).
- Slate: nfl.com Week 5 lists 15 games; cross-checked against ESPN’s scoreboard feed and the nflverse schedule, all three agree. Distinct teams counted: 30 playing plus Kansas City and Carolina on bye = 32 (L-001). No games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. Bears–Packers was moved from 1:25 to 10:00 AM PT by a league announcement on Sept 29. Kickoff times from nfl.com, converted from ET to PT (L-003).
- Primetime broadcasts (L-002): Thursday on Prime Video; Sunday night on NBC with Peacock; Monday night listed as ESPN and ABC by ESPN’s own scoreboard feed, ManningCast on ESPN2 per ESPN’s published ManningCast schedule. The ABC simulcast was not confirmed on an ESPN or ABC press page. London game on NFL Network. Network press releases were not reached directly; booths come from Awful Announcing’s Week 5 grid (read through a syndicated copy — the original returned 404), Yahoo Sports and Pro Football Network, which agree everywhere except the London booth: two sources list Jason Kelce as a second analyst, one as sideline; no sideline reporter confirmed. 506sports.com returned a blank page.
- Final scores for Weeks 1–4 from the nflverse structured results feed, cross-checked against ESPN’s scoreboard feed: 64 of 64 agree (L-004).
- Odds: ScoresAndOdds in one pass at 4:12 AM PT (L-006). Only one book 1.5+ points off: BetMGM’s Buccaneers–Cowboys total of 49 against 47.5. Openers matched to VegasInsider’s open with timestamps (L-007); every one is a mid-May schedule-release look-ahead line, not a Sunday-night open. VegasInsider does not label its time zone; read as UTC because it matches ScoresAndOdds’ UTC log. Over/under consensus withheld on every game (L-005). Spread consensus from ScoresAndOdds only.
- ATS: covers.com records. TeamRankings disagrees on five teams through pushes (NE, NYJ, LAC, DET, SEA); Seattle is a three-way split (Covers 2-2, TeamRankings 1-1-2, VegasInsider 1-2-1). nflverse closing lines grade several more differently (e.g. TB 0-3-1, DAL 2-1-1). First week the last-4 window is full; it equals the season.
- L-008, undecided quarterbacks: Baltimore — forecast published for Tyler Huntley (Falcons 24-20). Alternative with Lamar Jackson: Ravens by 3 (Ravens 24-21, Ravens 59%). Washington — Jayden Daniels practised fully and is expected to start; if Athan Kaliakmanis starts instead, the alternative is Giants by 4 (Giants 21-17).
- Calibration: the active totals adjustment (+1.5 points on every predicted total) was applied before reading each over/under lean. Even after it, 11 of 15 predicted totals sit under the market number. Three outright underdog picks this week: Raiders, Browns, 49ers.
- Advanced stats: EPA per play and success rate computed from nflverse play-by-play, Weeks 1–4, no garbage-time filter, so values differ slightly from rbsdm.com. SRS computed from the 64 results by the standard iterative method (margin plus average opponent rating) rather than read from Pro Football Reference, which was not accessed directly this week; not verified against PFR’s published figures. Next Gen Stats figures are cited from NFL.com and team coverage, not pulled first-hand. ESPN FPI and DVOA not gathered. Advanced coverage is below the skill’s two-source bar.
- Injuries: Wednesday’s official participation reports for all Sunday games; Thursday’s were not yet posted. Final designations exist only for Buccaneers–Cowboys. Bills–Rams has no official report yet (Monday game; statuses from coaches and Week 4 game reports). Saints and Jets reports were walkthrough estimates. Conflicts: Tee Higgins DNP on the official report vs “limited” in one outlet (used official); Tyler Shough limited vs full on two versions of the Saints report; Pat Surtain II and Pat Bryant reported headed to IR by ESPN, contradicted by Sean Payton (both remain on the active report).
- Not yet published: retractable-roof decisions for AT&T Stadium, State Farm Stadium (storms and gusts to 35 mph forecast) and Mercedes-Benz Stadium; Lamar Jackson’s status; Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins; Will Anderson Jr.’s ankle; Friday game designations for all Sunday and Monday games.
- Local beat coverage: many outlets were blocked or paywalled to automated reading this week, including the Tampa Bay Times, Dallas Morning News, Florida Times-Union, Chicago Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, Cincinnati Enquirer, Nola.com, MassLive, Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Washington Post, New York Post (direct), Denver Post, LA Times, OC Register, Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Arizona Republic, SF Chronicle, Mercury News, Seattle Times and Buffalo News. Local context instead came from the Philadelphia Inquirer, PhillyVoice, Chicago Sun-Times, Post-Gazette, Boston Globe, Palm Beach Post, Denver Gazette, MLive, NJ.com and Cleveland.com via syndication, local radio and TV (98.5 The Sports Hub, Seattle Sports 710, WGR 550, WJLA) and team sites.
- Weather: NWS point forecasts for every outdoor U.S. venue, issued early Thursday; Sunday and Monday forecasts are three to four days out. London from the UK Met Office model via Open-Meteo, not an official stadium forecast.
- Series records were not independently verified; the Raiders–Patriots all-time record differs between Raiders.com (18-17-1) and 98.5 The Sports Hub (20-18-1), so neither is printed. One preview’s claim about the Texans’ record against Tennessee under DeMeco Ryans conflicted with the results and was not used.
- Special teams: no comparable free team-level metric gathered; individual kicking notes only.
- Schedule-difficulty tiers provisional (four games played).
